Sometime in the late 90's, I remember playing the demo for an RTS game on a PC Gamer demo CD. The RTS game was 2D isometric, bright colors. You could play as a couple different human factions, or these giant bipedal creatures. These giants had some kind of special name, and there were a lot of different types, such as a plant-based one that looked like Treants. Scattered across a map were neutral human towns and giant dens. You could take over these towns, trade between towns with caravans, and upgrade the population and defenses of conquored/enslaved towns. The cool thing about playing as the giant creatures was when you took over a human town, you enslaved them.
I wish I could remember some solid keyword to search by, but I'm drawing a complete blank. If this sounds vaguely familiar to
anyone, I hope you are able to recall more than I. I've had an itch to play this game again, if I can find it...

Genewars?
What era was it set in? Was it Sci-fi or modern?
