Seeing as I'm bored and SEN is a nicely competitive society, here's a chance to show your money smarts and beat the other teams to win. As there are no minerals, I'm afraid the prize is limited to big bragging rights. I hope people are interested in this and sign up - we'll see how it goes. I know things are a little confusing, so post in the thread if you don't understand the rules.

The SEN Stock Simulation Game

RULES

Welcome to the SEN Stock Simulation Game. The object of the game is simple: to get rich. Complete stock market trades, invest in or borrow from the bank, and make daring deals with your opponents. You can play as an individual or a team, but your score is determined from your profit per person. The rules below explain the details as well as some technicalities. I will serve as broker and banker, as well as resolve any disputes that may arise. The game will finish at midnight on August 28, 2009 (Friday). The individual or team with the most profit will be declared the winner.

For regulation reasons, only members with accounts created on or before June 22 may play. You may join at any time between now and the end of the game.

THE PLAY

To sign up, post in the thread or PM me. You may form a team or play by yourself; either way, each person begins with $100,000 and no debt. That means a team of three people starts with $300,000 and so on. Teams are COMMUNAL, which means that any sale, purchase, or investment made by any team member is a binding contract for the whole team regardless of the objections of anyone else on the team. If there are real problems with getting along within a team, you can petition me to split and I will handle it on a case-by-case basis.

Play can only occur during trading days (Monday through Friday, holidays excluded). At the end of each trading day, I will update various statstics, including a ranking of net worth, popular stocks traded in the past week, bank assets, etc. Individual trades and actions by teams will be kept private. The markets will be closed on July 3 in observance of Independence Day.

If any player or team is required to pay cash to another team or the broker and is unable to liquidate stock or savings assets to pay them (bankrupt), they are required to borrow from the bank on a variable rate loan to meet their creditors' demands. This is the only case where you can exceed your borrowing limit (see Banking below).

TRADING IN STOCKS

You may buy and sell any stock that is listed and trading on the floor of either the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the Nasdaq. Stocks listed only on foreign exhcanges (such as Nikkei) and pink sheet stocks may not be traded. If a stock is de-listed at any time during the game, anyone holding that stock will be required to liquidate their assets at the last closing price on the market floor. In trading stock, you have two options: holding long or selling short. Buying stocks long is the traditional approach; you buy a stock and hope to sell it at a higher price. Short selling, however, allows you to profit when a stock declines in value. In order to short sell, you first sell shares borrowed from your broker, promising to return those shares at a later date. At that time, you must buy back the shares you sold and return them. If you still don't understand how shorting works, you can look online or try asking me.

I will act as stockbroker and collect a 1.5% commission on the value of all stocks traded. (For example, if you buy $50,000 worth of stock, you must pay an additional $750 to me in commission.) To place an order, either post in the thread or send me a PM (the privacy of your investments is up to you) with the stock symbol you wish to trade in, the number of shares, and whether you wish to buy or sell the stock short or long. Furthermore, you must select one of two order types below. There will be no intraday trading.

Day Orders will be completed at a good price for the coming day. Technically, you will get the stock at the better 25% mark between the day's high and low. That is, if a stock trades between $50 and $60 in a day, buying on a day order will net you the stock for $52.50, and selling on a day order will get you $57.50.

This got changed for balance reasons before any stocks were traded.

Limit Orders can be carried over multiple days. Include a target price with your order, and the next time the stock reaches that price, the order will be completed. To cancel a limit order, send another message. Stock market hours are from 9:30am to 4pm Eastern Daylight Time. Some good sites to check stock prices are http://finance.yahoo.com and http://money.cnn.com

DEALING WITH THE BANK

I will also be acting as a banker to allow you another avenue of investment. You may store money in the bank or take out a loan. The rates for bank savings and loan will be posted and will change daily at my discretion. I will be changing the rates to try to ensure that the bank makes a profit. IMPORTANT: You may only borrow from the bank an amount less than or equal to your net worth. The following options are available at the bank (all rates are compounded daily):

Fixed-rate loans allow a locked loan rate for a sum of money. The rate will be higher than that of a variable-rate loan, but it can't change during the duration of the loan.

Variable-rate loans allow a loan at a cheaper rate, but the rate may change, causing you to owe more or less interest. The rate will not change more than 1 percentage point per day.

Both loans can be repaid whenever you want.

Basic savings accounts can be worked like normal bank accounts. You collect interest according to a variable savings rate.

Certificate of Deposit (CD) accounts accrue more interest, but require a minimum deposit of $1,000 and cannot be added to or withdrawn from until they mature in 2 weeks (and you must withdraw all). Once you start a CD account, the interest is fixed.

My bank hours are 9am to 5pm Pacific Daylight Time, Monday through Friday. Transactions made while the bank is closed will be effective at 9am the next banking day.

DEALS WITH OTHER TEAMS

In an attempt to pull tricks or gain an advantage, you may cut deals with other teams. For these deals to be binding, a contract must be drawn up, seen by me, and agreed to by both parties. I will approve the terms of the contract to avoid ridiculous terms, but most things within reason are allowable.

We live in a society.

I remember doing a stock simulation with a much smaller amount about six years ago and ending up with a nice "profit". Can I be the jerk who puts his entire $100,000 into a CD so he can laugh if everyone else fails at investing in stock? :D

The last sim I played that almost would have worked, but my team pulled a nice 30% profit by the end because GM went bankrupt :) I want to be the asshole broker who makes more money in commission than any team :P

Zycorax registered, will update in a min

I never really got the stock market. I don't know how this and that works.

Makes me wonder how the rest of SEN can do.

I'll need to see one person to put forth their team name and a list of people on the team - I don't want to lock people in with vague statements.
