I want to make a map based on the video game Chrono Trigger. There is already a wonderful chrono trigger rpg map out there but that shouldn't halt someone to make another kind. (i'll be working on Kingdom Hearts rpg map as well)
Everyone can appreciate all the wonderful World war II maps out there. Each telling the same freaking story but are great variations none the less. Who can forget the helm deep maps and some recreations of actual video games into a SC map. Keeping sc alive.
UMS maps have certaintly kept SC alive be they original or not. Having such a limitless way of editing and creating new games within this game keeps this classic game contemporary. That movie Troy came out couple years ago and theres a sc map on it. Theres pretty much a sc interpretation map for anything like for starwars, battlestar galactica, etc.
In retrospect, there are a lot of original idea map that makes sc way more fun. I love building my own Turret defense or running away from a cat. I love TSing (i still noob). The more original, the more imagination the players must appreciate to enjoy. I like having to be the Orcs who are sent to helms deep to kill the humans pretending that the guns being shot are like flying arrows. There are plenty of original maps to play
Where Starcraft have succeeded, others have not. Many RTS games fail to give such a good stable community of players to continue to play. They lack the connection of bringing online computer socializing and gaming together. For example, the command and conquer and age of empires (which my brother loves) lacks the idle chatting/channel aspects. Also, both games have no good custom maps. Theres no creative map editing available for these games. Diablo u can only travel through places again and again but the pvping is still fun.
(chatting/channels helps keep players. No matter how cheap games looks, such as yahoo games. If u can idle/chat, ppl will do it.)
Timing can never be so perfect. I am typing this by pure impulse. What could be a contribution of starcraft being so popular (and still having 100,000 players on bnet) is when it was release. Not all games have to have chatting/idling to be a sucess. Look at Counter Strike, all ppl do is join a game and shoot all day. Bnet was certainly the pioneer of a new innovative gaming experience at that time.
Can SC2 pull it as well? Statisically, there no other game that has kept 100k players for so many years. Games now can get lots of hype but that hype immediatly evaporates in a few months. Will SC2 bring in newcomers, not just veterans that want a nostalgic gaming experience? How creative will ppl get with the UMS maps and will it? Will blizzard fans of other games stop leveling up their stupid druid and come play starcraft2 or stop going to the cow level and play sc2?
