Networking With XP's and Vista's

About 2 months ago I got my computer (Windows XP) to successfully work in networking with my mothers desktop (Windows Vista). Both computers are directly connected through the use of a wireless/direct router (2 in 1 deal) and I had no issues with transfering files and playing network games... But now it isn't so good. I also have a laptop (Windows XP) that picks up the wireless internet and is also a part of the internet, while it is on, and does a fine job with transfers to my desktop (Windows XP) but I'm having a bit of a problem getting into my mother's Vista. Both with my laptop and my desktop, it prompts me with a user name and password to be entered to get in. Never before was a prompted for a password, but I tired entering some just to see what might happen. I first thought that it was asking for the user name and password of the Vista, so I input that and it didn't let me in. I typed it in case-sensitive and everything else and nothing. Any reason why I'm not able to get into the Vista anymore and why any other vista's that get onto the network won't allow this either, such as my girlfriends new vista laptop... Any suggestions?

Have the Vista computer set up a network, and have all three join the same Domain name, see if that fixes it.

I did have the Vista setup the network to begin with.. I was talking with some people today about this and they suggested that I turn off some network settings that may have a password be required... How could something like this be done on the Vista?

Is that for the XP or the Vista? And will this fix the problem with accessing certain folders or to get on the entire network?

Whatever folders you assign it to(and I assume it's on Vista, I don't think I've seen that page on XP) will have those permissions, so for any sharing folders you'll have to do that.

It's for both XP Pro and Vista.

What do you mean by "get on the network"? Connect to the wireless? Access shared printers and folders from other computers?
Does Start->Run(win-R if it's not there)->\\<computer you want to access's name> work?

Networking with Vista is strange thing. Your XP computers won't be able to see or access files on your Vista files, but Vista can access XP files. As for LAN gaming, I've never had a problem, so it may just be you.

The thing is that at one point I was able to view the files on the vista without anything popping up to keep me out from doing it. That is the odd part about this whole scenario...
