I ordered this little puppy on Wednesday, and with 3 day shipping, Newegg had it to me by Thursday. Basically, it's a really streamlined notebook that runs a modified Linux OS (so it doesn't need as many resources). The specs aren't spectacular at all, but it's really designed for simple stuff like web surfing and writing. Watching YouTube isn't bad on here, but you'll only be able to fit limited music onto it (hard drives are only 2, 4, and 8 Gb models). I don't really have any complaints about it - this 4 Gb model only ran me $350. The hardest thing to get used to is the smaller than normal keyboard, but after a few hours of usage, you get used to it.

/me jealous

Not that I have any money to spare on one, I've really liked some of these new UMPC's coming out, including the Eee PC. The Eee PC seems to be the one that thus far has done mostly everything right for a UMPC.

Another UMPC I'm sort of interested in is the 2133, I like the size a bit more, but the price is also a bit more steep.

What uses do you even plan for the Eee?

only 4gb of hdd space? I would freaking flip out with such low amount of space (considiering you can fit the same amount on a DVD.)

I don't see why anyone would get a UMPC, when for the same price you can get a full sized laptop with better specs.

I don't think you can get a $350 dollar laptop for that price.

Also, UMPCs are much smaller, more portable, light, etc.

It only weighs 2 pound. Checking Newegg, the Asus Eee PC is the cheapest notebook available, with models ranging from $300 - $400. The cheapest "full" notebook is at least $100 more (and only that on sale). Looking at original prices, the cheapest competitor is $200 more than the most expensive Eee model on Newegg. With the actual PC, you only get Vista Home Basic, which isn't even standard for Vista machines (Home Premium is). Also, Linux runs much faster on the Eee's processor than MacOS or Windows do on the Celeron and Sempron chips you find in cheap notebooks.

You have to keep in mind that it's stupid to compare UMPCs to fully fledged notebooks. I use my Eee PC to surf the web, chat with people, and write stories and papers. I don't use it to game, watch movies, or listen to music, although I could. If I wanted to, I could buy a $50 USB stick and fit like 10,000 .mp3's on it or several movies. However, I have a full sized tower that is capable of doing all of that much better than any notebook is currently able to do (and by much better I mean several times so). I'd much rather save money on the notebook and just get a functional work notebook and spend the money towards a faster gaming rig than get a decent rig and decent notebook.

If the Eee PC had at least a somewhat higher resolution screen (possibly as an option on a slightly more expensive model?), I may have considered getting one to use partly as a remote terminal to log into my main system, but 800x480 isn't quite enough for some programs I use. I suppose if there was a remote desktop client program I could use that would scale it down it might still look ok, though (but I have no idea if such a program exists).

Heh, that would be close enough, I think. Also, that is even closer to a 16:9 ratio than the other one is and high enough resolution to play a DVD in full resolution (though external drive needed, right? or does it have one of those drives in that small space?). Even so, I don't think I'll be getting one any time soon, since I already bought something else last month.
