What keys do you use for movement in FPSs? I've found that in many new games, WASD is simply unacceptable. I need to keep moving my hand too much to perform the gazillion functions that you need to use to stay alive... I ended up moving over to ESDF, which was a lot nicer, since my pinky could find more buttons without moving my fingers off of the movement keys.
I was happy with this for a while, but I eventually kept hitting the fucking evil 'windows key' every time I tried to crouch... >.> To fix that, I just tried out having YGHJ for movment, and it's nice... I can do a lot more without moving my hand

I use WASD but I can see how ESDF would be very useful for adding functions to closer keys.

If you just close Explorer.exe hitting the windows key does nothing.

Or you can rip it out (like I have done lol) or download a program to prevent that from happening (like I found out after losing the ripped out windows key - lol again).

I'm used to WASD controls in general.
And this may sound weird, but to me it's a lot more comfortable than the standard FPS and WASD controls. Especially if "Left Shift", "Left Ctrl", and "Left Alt" are used by my thumb and pinky, it gets annoying. And I don't know anybody else who uses these controls, I made it myself. It's better using the controls right handedly and aiming, firing left handedly. Here's the list of the right handed controls: 8 - Move Forward 4 - Strafe Left 5 - Move Backward 6 - Strafe Right 0 - Jump Enter - Crouch 9 - Reloading 7 - Enter Vehicle, do action, etc NumPad - Scoreboard - - Select best Weapon + - Select last (previous) Weapon Unreal Tournament Right Arrow - Translocator/Hoverboard Crysis 1 - Customize Weapons 2 - Nanosuit abilities About the mouse, I will switch the settings and set the right click as primary fire and place it left of the keyboard. In other FPS games, "Left Arrow", "1", "2", "3", "/", "*", "-" could be anything. But reaching my index finger to the "Page Up" and "Page Down" isn't part of my keys. And if I want to choose a specific weapon without using my left hand, I would use "Insert", "Home", "Page Up", "Delete", "End", "Page Down" and using the extra keys mentioned in the first sentence of this paragraph. With these controls, I let my left hand freely get full access of all actions by memorizing the letters. Even though I still need to use the mouse for aiming. But most importantly, the rest can easily be accessed with my left hand if there are more keys and it's unlikely I would use the mouse at the same time for them. Plus in Unreal Tournament, I can use numbers 1-9 above the letters for taunt animations. Although I will still use them for changing to specific weapons. And since I'm so use to the WASD controls, I can use them for other purposes primarily. |

Arrow keys are fur noobiess!! In counter strike source, you cant use the arrowkeys to strafe (left and right spin you) and everything is too far away. WASD FTW!!

I remember the old school games where you had to use arrow keys to move. God I'm glad someone invented mouse aiming.
EDIT: My thumb is pretty useless unless something is mapped to the space bar. Depending on the game its either jump or some sort of attack. |

A game that takes up a shitload of keys is Savage. Before I reinstalled it yesterday, I had the left side of the letters on my keyboard up to U, G (H?) and B filled with controls, and the other side, top row of numbers and the entire numpad bound to voice macros.
Now I have to re-bind all of the voice macros in the console... you'd think they would've made something in the options panel for this in SFE, wouldn't you? |

Hmm, I probably should put up my standard ESDF controls.
ESDF - Moooooove (obviously) Tab - Scores Q - Flashlight W - Use R - Reload T - Switch weapon (Halo PC only) A - Melee attack G - Switch grenades (Halo PC only)/Use grenade Shift - Sprint/Walk (never played a game that had both) Z - Scope (in BF games, scope is right mouse button, and Z is prone) Ctrl - Crouch Space - Jump |

8456 is better than arrow keys for left handers.
And frankly, I don't know anybody else who uses the numpad numbers for FPS besides me. |

I primarily use WASD but sometimes I use some custom arrangement as IJKL or UHJK.
I mainly use my right hand for shooting/aim, but I can also use my left hand (not as well). I also use an inverted mouse. =) I've used ,AOE before too (Dvorak Keyboard Layout). |

When I first started playing FPS games years upon years ago, I wasn't even aware of WASD, so I naturally used the arrow keys. I remember my cousin and I were playing Unreal Tournament on his LAN. He noticed me using the arrow keys and said WASD was better. I shrugged and continued with the arrow keys, and despite never having played UT until then, whereas he'd been playing for a few weeks, I still kicked his ass 2:1. I didn't even know what the Redeemer was and blew myself up trying to use it (got him in the same blast at least), and I only found it because I was following him underwater and killed him as he grabbed it. Heh. Anywho, I switched over to WASD sometime after that. Definately easier on the wrist. =oP

The game that first brought my keyboard layout was Shadow Warrior, but back then I did not use mouse, but I used the arrows to turn around. I fired with Ctrl and strafed with Alt. Some years later, Quake 3 made me change my keyboard layout, swithcing to my actual layout.
