This looks awesome!

Hope I'm not bursting any bubbles, but you know there was already an awesome, popular map titled Galactic Conquest right? Not that you can't reuse the name I suppose.

I had this feeling, like a creeping suspicion that that was the case, but I figured what the hell. I can always rename it as I have several more titles in mind. For now I think I'll keep it unless there's genuine issue or concern.

Glad it looks cool guys, I would be super grateful to get some test games in with anyone available so I can make more changes and add more features!

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

Well, Galactic Conquest had a huge playerbase back in 2007, so if anyone from then is still playing... They'll bring it up.

Hype! I might be able to play some test games when I get my SSD, should have one of them within a week and I have holidays next week too.

Hey! :D Good to see you here.

Wondering about adding some sort of upkeep system so massing a huge fleet isn't the only strategic option. Thoughts?

Trying to figure out ways to make the map more interesting because it's very one dimensional right now.

I dabbled with multifarious diplomacy and battle maps back in the golden days. It's very difficult to bake engaging metagame into resource-based battle maps, especially when alliances are loose and non-permanent.

I'm not sure what kind of upkeep you mean, but a flat unit cap works alright. I was partial to resource-based penalties for large armies and progressively larger penalties for larger armies. But that alone won't change optimal strategy without also adding some additional mechanics. New victory mechanics are especially needed when the metagame evolves into cold war brinksmanship (which is typical of BW maps). The most well received mechanic I ever employed was a Victory Point system which accumulated based on territory controlled (so planets or cities in your map) and kills. This meant that conquering territory brought you closer to victory, but so did accumulating kills in PvP. Recurrent PvP made things much more engaging. It's worth clarifying, you could lose territory but you couldn't 'lose' kills, which meant large wars left a permanent impact on the progression of the game and the game had some inevitable (if perhaps anticlimactic) end when the VP goal was reached.

Ultimately however this was not enough to incentivize PvP from the very start. As a result I ended up changing the VP system to coincide with the income system, such that kills also increased income permanently each turn. This meant that whether you chose to expand all over the map, or scrap with a small neighbor you generally ended up with similar income (perhaps a little less, but also with fewer territorial liabilities to defend).

v6 released, major update featuring completely new terrain. Also various balance tweaks. Ups should be far more useful now.

I was unable to build a refinery on one of the vespene geysirs in the bottom left corner. The screenshot I took seems to have disappeared, but it was just north of the start location, on the left hand side of an island with two geysirs.
Also, as Jack said during the game, upgrades for the Protoss and Zerg units would've been nice.
Being able to build Guardians to take out turrets could be nice as well, though I guess they'd have to be pretty expensive and tech heavy to not make it too easy to take out all the neutral turrets early on.

Guardians would an excellent mid-game unit for taking out spores and cannons, which tend to be fairly costly to destroy. If the game is close then you can't really afford to waste ships on them.
