Still Napping

Hai! I'm hosting this PF campaign called Mirror Darkly. It takes place in a world called Elysonia, under the guide and direction of me, your friendly neighborhood DM.

Right now, it's in development, but I am accepting players here. This is a thread to help you get started if you're new, and later, look up some information about the world of Elysonia.

[ World Content ]

Short Stories

Selena R'ila

[ Character Creation ]

- 20 point buy.
- All core classes and races open (other stuff is pending investigation).
- First level max HP, 3/4 max every level after. Fractions are rounded down. These fractions are kept for the purpose of leveling and combined with other fractions (3/4 of d6 is 4.5, so you would add 4 HP. Next level you would have another 4.5, the halves combine and you gain 5 HP).
- Level 3 starting. Starting gold is 3100 gp.
- Eschew Materials is default for everyone.

[ Resources ]

Pathfinder SRD
-
This is a free resource for Pathfinder. It's basically all of the rules and stats, sans all of the fluff. It's for quick looking up things you're already familiar with. It's not a recommended place to start learning, however.

Pathfinder Official Website
-
This is the official Pathfinder website, there's a bunch of stuff on it.

Pathfinder Core Rulebook
-
This is the Pathfinder core rulebook. It has everything a player character needs and should explain everything you need to know to get started. Reading this book is THE place to start to learn about role playing if you've never role played before. It's got the fluff, it's got the explanations, and you can pick up a digital copy for only $10. This has everything you need to play (except dice, but we'll get to that later).

Myth Weavers
-
A great place to store and share character sheets. It does some basic calculations for you, but just minimalist stuff. You can use any other online character sheet host you want too, but keep in mind I'll have to keep an up-to-date record of it, even if you opt for old pencil and paper.

[ FAQ ]

Gestalt?
-
Nah, we have a bunch of new players, so I don't want to do anything too complicated (it makes my job harder too, you know).

When will this start?
-
The date is TBH, but I'll probably have everything setup for a first run in a few weeks.

I don't know what you're saying! HALP!
-
If you have any questions about how to start or any specifics feel free to PM me or FatalException.

When will you let us know the limits on character creation?
-
NEVAR BWAHAHA -- Nah I should get them out in a week or so. D&D isn't new to me, but I have limited experience with Pathfinder. They're similar, but I still need to go through all of the material and deem what's appropriate and what isn't. There's at least eight core books and a bunch of third party stuff for me to sift through, so you can imagine this isn't a light task (DM'ing is really hard work, actually =p).

How will we be playing? When will we be playing? Where will be playing? TO WHAT EXTENT?
-
IRC of course. It's got plenty of things that can really benefit the game. Depending on schedules and interest, I may be running multiple groups as well, so don't be too afraid that you won't be able to make it. A lot of this stuff is TBA as well.

Do I have to go buy dice?
-
NOPE! You don't need to buy any dice. That's the beauty of the digital age. To prevent cheating and to help me out, all dice rolling will be done in the internets through IRC, no batteries required.

$10? BUT THATS A WHOLE MONTHS RENT. I can't afford that.
-
If you need help obtaining a copy of materials you need, don't hesitate to PM me.

Apparently we can also use classes from Ultimate Magic and Ultimate Combat too (Magus, Gunslinger, Ninja, Samurai).

I question the wisdom of adding more than the CRB, considering most of us are new players.

Do whatever you're comfortable with, if you're not comfortable playing a class outside the CRB, then don't play one =o

Yeah new classes are fine but what about all the other stuff contained in other rule books?

All the base rules are the same. Those are merely expansion packs, in lack of a better analogy.

Actually, that's a pretty good analogy. All the extra books add are new units, but since we're not computers it's ok to mix versions. :P

Ah ok, new units and classes aren't a problem. I just thought there'd be heaps of new rules and such ;0 where can I see all the stuff the other books add without buying the actual book? Is the reference document on paizo.com sufficient?

Uhh. The reference document is really the only other way.

Hence why I asked if it was sufficient.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

The Pathfinder SRD seems to have a lot of the added stuff on it already. I'm sure you'd be fine with just that.

One of the advantages of PF is that the CRB is actually a bunch of books crammed into one. 3.5e had to experience with the whole add-on thing. There was a Player's Guide 1, 2, and 3. Each offering more rules and detail, as well as more classes.

The sad part about supplements is that there is usually only a handful of useful classes (*cough* complete warrior). Supplements may add plenty of rules regarding specific things (e.g., monsters as PCs), plenty of new spells or feats, but they don't change anything from the CRB, and you really don't need more than that to have a great time.

Does the default Eschew Materials for everyone take up a feat slot that we would otherwise use for something else? Or is it a bonus? I'd assume bonus.

For rolling stats, do we just use the max possible or should we actually roll a dice to see what our stats are for things like HP?

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

For HP at level 1, you do your maximum Hit Die + CON mod. Then as a house rule we're doing 3/4 of your Hit Die (rounded down, unless you have a .5 left over from the prior level) + CON mod per level. We add the rounded down .5 points together, though, when applicable.

For rolling of ability scores, it's a 20-point buy, so there's not actually any dice-rolling involved in character creation.

The feat is a bonus. I don't want to keep track of all those little things. It's hassle for the players, it's hassle for me, and it only makes stuff not fun.

HP, as said, is max at first level, then 3/4 max every level thereafter. Fractions are rounded down, but kept and added together for the purpose of leveling. This means that if you have a HD of 6, and you're level two, then you should have 6 + 4.5 HP. But for all purposes except the aforementioned, you have 10 HP. If you then gain a level you would add an additional 4.5 HP. This means 10.5 + 4.5, for a total of 15.

That way people aren't getting ripped off from having a HD that's not divisible by 4.
