There was this map i played once (lost it) where you had a dropship control system; you hotkeyed at the beginning, but for the rest of the game it was invisible. When I double tapped the hotkey I could see no dropship, just an empty block of terrain.

You might not have been visioned to yourself, so you would just see fog. Or, the screen was constantly centered so you couldn't look anyway.
