My friend's looking to upgrade his gaming capabilities.
His computer:
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/desktops/desktop-inspiron-518/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-inspiron-518&cs=22&s=dfh

My recommended addons:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102858t
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131377R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022

He needs a new mobo because his current one doesn't have a PCI-E 2.0 slot. So SEN, will it work?

None.

The sword and the faith

First link was broken, took off the t and got this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102858 so I'm assuming that. Also, if he has a PCI-E x16 1.0 slot, he's fine. 2.0 is only an issue for cards like the 4870x2/5970/GTX295 at this point.

I would not buy that open box ASUS. It was probably returned due to memory issues. Get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128380 Cheaper, and not open box. Good board.

Mobo might not fit in Dell case due to it being proprietary in terms of screws and sizing. In fact, I'd bet money it wont fit.

Other than that things SEEM compatible but because we're dealing with a Dell and because that model could have several different CPUs, we can't be sure.

Get me a CPU-Z readout including every single tab it can display, and if possible, a non-blurry well lit picture of the inside of his case. If you can do this, we can be more sure of what we're doing.

What CPU does he have? The 5770 will be bottlenecked more than likely by the CPU. I suggest something a little more in line with his computer's age like a g92. Or a 5670. Try to combo the psu/motherboard/gfx. Remember than you're looking for the total price off, not the combo which has all 3 and is only $30 off.

I also can't find a good review for that PSU (the one decent one I found couldn't provide a ripple, and showed a pretty bad voltage drop at load), so I can't give my OK on it. OCZ has a lot of good power supplies and a lot of shitty ones. They're also the worst in terms of linearity in their products: OCZ buys power supplies from FSP, CWT, Seasonic, Highpower, and Impervio, and probably more. Contrary to logical thought, the ModXstream Pro is very different from the StealthXStream. In the case of the 400 W models of both, they're both made by CWT, but the ModXStream Pro is out of spec, and an all around terrible product. The StealthXstream ranks way up there with low efficiency Seasonics, and is almost 80+ bronze in a hotbox.

That's a mini-tower case, so only micro ATX, although double check with him first. I only see 4 expansion slots, not the usual 7.

Good catches rockz.

I was just saying yesterday how hit-or-miss most OCZ products are, in both PSU and memory.

If that case is mATX, it just isn't going to play nice with a full size GPU and can't fit a full size board.

So now that I've learned I don't need a PCI-E 2.0, I don't need a new motherboard for him. Any suggestions for a good GPU and PSU that'll fit in that case?

None.

Excellent psu, with excellent ripple. Also it's bronze efficiency. -$4 optical drive for your future stores.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.525413
combo with 5770
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.514493
not as good, but modular psu.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.525412
combo with 5750

I can't find anything good in the 500W range. OCZ has the best deals right now on PSUs, and none of the 500W psus are any good that I've seen.
