Can you adjust the limit of units you select in a single key?

You mean, limit the number of units you can assign to a unit group hotkey?

It's do-able with a heavy chunk of triggers at least, I'm sure there are better ways to do it but you could make a trigger using control group, and a variable. Combining them into if control group have >amount then remove unit from control group. This is a very clumsy solution, but I just tested it, and it works as planned. If you try to make a control group with more than the limited amount, it automaticly removes units from the group then runs the check again, and repeats this til the amount is within the limit. If you want I will post the trigger I made, but as you said you already figured it out.
