I used switches. The critters were added in later versions.

I'm not sure what Ahli used for the randomness, but I think it has something to do with the critters over on the right of the map.

That would be stupid, though. Only switch randomization, either single or multiple, can be truly random. Plus, players could exploit the critters if that's the system used.
