Hi!
Do you guys remember the old C&C series with an atom bomb, air strikes and 'parachutes' flying from the sky?
An air strike would be easy to do in SC - ordering a pack of wraiths to fly from the corner of the map to the destined direction. However how fucking cool would it be to target such a thing with the comsat scan?
Can comsat scan be detected to center a location in the place where the scan accured, that is the question...
None.
Don't be so hesitant. It cannot. Period.

Comsats can be detected via command, but not bring. So you know its there, but not where.
There is a quite unpractical way to detect its location however:
- Place a grid of Observers around your map for a player that is allied to everyone.
- When you detect the comsat crate a scourge near each of them. The owner of the scourges must be hostile and no vision to the obs but vision to the caster of the comsat and ally to all other players.
- Then the scourges will kill the obs where the scan went off.
- Now you can detect where NO obs is and you got the scan location
Problems:
- It's not very precise
- It's not instant
- Obs can be seen
- Detectors screw the system
- Obs can be shot down manually (give obs high hp and always heal them, and scourge high damage, to counter that)
I was working on a concept map to do just that before my computer got hit by a virus. It was almost working, actually, and was accurate to within one tile. I don't remember quite how I did this, but I'm sure I could re-create it given enough time. I only remember it involved a varient of the Mobile Grid technique somehow.

Computer virus erase your memory of the concept, too?
Recreating C&C: Generals is easily doable in SC. Since Generals' abilities like the nuke, anthrax bomb, etc., require a time delay to take place, you can use a system as follows:
256x1 vertical location
256x1 horizontal location
Place a border on the outer edge of the map that you can put two "Coordinate" units, one in the left border and one in the bottom border. The player moves these two units to adjust the two locations. When the "Nuke" (or other General Ability) is launched, order a fast moving unit to move from one end of the horizontal location to the other end. Wherever that fast moving unit hits the vertical location will be the place you want to nuke.

No, I stopped working on it a few weeks before the virus hit.

Thanks for all the ideas, but I'm afraid I do not know really how to make that one PcFredz talke about. Any tutorial .scx file perhaps?
TassadarZeratul, be more predictable in the future - you could have thaugh that exactly I would have a need of such a script

It's pretty easy. Instead of using the comsat he suggested to have 2 units, each representing one axis.
Move the unit to the desired x and y coordinate to aim.
the trick about 1x256 / 256x1 locations is that they cannot go over the edge of the map. So they will work like a targeting reticle.
Where both locations intersect you target you general power.
That would work out, but that's not an idiot-free method. I need something much simplier.
None.
Why don't you test out the theory before asking for more and more stuff. What PCFredz has suggested seems perfectly reasonable AND valid.
None.
Please explain what you don't get about that method, and we can explain it to you, that's how you learn and do better in the future
