Now that I've gotten my music collection transferrred to my computer, I need a way to play it. The problem is that a large portion of it is in .m4a, which WMP doesn't play. Can anyone recommend one that isn't iTunes and has a miniplayer that can stay on top of windows?
Or, better yet, a program that can encode hundreds of files with little user action?

For some minerals I might transfer those to mp3 for you
None.
<3 winamp
though with some skins, especially one of the defaults, it can become sucky (some skins change behavior it seems)
I despise vlc
None.
It successfully added all my music to WMP, but imported no metadata(artists, albums, etc.)
I'm going to try Winamp.
Is there any sort of miniplayer function other than shading the window? NVM found it.

VLC is a universal program but the quality sucks major balls.
None.
I would disagree there. The quality is fine, but I don't think it's a good choice as far as standalone media player. AFAIK, it doesn't have features like a library or playlist, but I could be wrong.

I don't know... You can set it to play everything in a folder shuffled or in a row, but does that count?
None.
VLC is my last resort program when other programs can't handle it.
It pretty much handles everything, but because of the bad interface I use Winamp for most media audio and visual.
I do however use VLC to play DVDs if i happen to play them with my DVD-Rom.
None.
Winamp failed because it had no true miniplayer and was just too confusing of an interface. VLC fails because it's epicly ugly and has no miniplayer. Any other suggestions?

Welllllll, on my site
Mentalpatient's Lair, I've got a few decent players some probably have never heard of, and most don't consume system resources like media player might. Also, if you're bored, check out the forums!

How do you figure WinAmp sucks, exactly?
Miniplayer? yes it does, double click on the winamp player, and in classic mode, I don't think the player is more than 15 pixels thick.
None.
Oh a compressed version is what you call a mini player?...
I always use winamp in classic mode, does the other one not have that option?
None.
It does, it's just a little bit buldgier.
