--- StarCraft II Producer Tony Hsu about a new map system and Blizzards custom maps ---

General Mengsk and peq from inStarcraft.de had the chance to speak with Tony Hsu, Producer for StarCraft II, and Bob Colayco from the PR-Team about Blizzard's custom maps, the problems with the ladder maps and the current Battle.Net map system.

Red classic.

Roundabout wars was one of the Earliest maps that was seen on the 1st page, and then It disappeared into obscurity...

The reason that I thought was because it had great potential to be something amazingly unique. But it's just another massing game.

I wonder why it has been spotlighted now, of all things.

:payne:

So basically, they do not plan on improving drastically the custom map system. Or at least, it looks like it to me.
Blizzard's really getting on my nerves.

Also, Devlin, when can we expect an interview with some of the Blizzard's staff? :awesome:

TH: Honestly, I think the current map system is working and it is a great iteration towards eventually where we want to be with Battle.Net as a continuously evolving system.

giant

It's like Starcraft 1, and apparently Warcraft III, doesn't exist.
This is pretty much the nail in the coffin for my chances for ever getting into mapping for SC2.

You should also take into account that Tony Hsu is not someone who is working in the BattleNet team and he also said that he is not too familiar with this system and what is done to improve it. And Bob Colayco told us that the BattleNet team is looking at the whole system from the ground up so I think they really will improve the system drastically, but it will take some time. The only problem I see with this is that they are working on the system now without really talking to the community about what exactly they are doing. So after half a year or so we might get a completely different system which is not working either.

Only getting on your nerves? Either you're fresh meat scarcely off the rack or you have an impenetrable amount of patience and lenience.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

@peq

We can only hope.
You should realize that many people have lost faith... or I guess.. SHOULD've lost faith.. in Blizzard by now.

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

like you ;D
btw, hi peq (yaay, another German).

@topic
I fear that Peq's point of view might become true.
The current system isn't perfect and what Blizzard might be developing now might be lacking features, too.
Talking with the customers/users seems the best solution for me. There are many educated people playing sc2 and everyone could throw up the base for implementing a very good system that doesn't lack necessary features.
Hiding information and release some half thought implementation isn't the best way to get this going.

I fear that there is still a manager pressing his big thumb onto Blizzard's epicness and chance of a frontier position in multiplayer experience.
SC2 may have been forced to be released after many years of development, but that may have ended after the successful release.
They have the experience and skill to do it the right way. We only have to hope that they will do it good enough because if they create a system that is good, they won't need to add much in the future. Redesigning stuff costs money and if you don't do it correctly the first time, the second time won't be much cheaper...

This is why I don't believe that they will put in the effort to make B.net 2 good.

Oh_Man -- whereas just "press X to get 50 health back" is pretty mindless
[2024-5-06. : 5:02 am]
Oh_Man -- because it adds anotherr level of player decision-making where u dont wanna walk too far away from the medic or u lose healing value
[2024-5-06. : 5:01 am]
Oh_Man -- initially I thought it was weird why is he still using the basic pre-EUD medic healing system, but it's actually genius

Ultraviolet -- Vrael
Vrael shouted: I almost had a heart attack just thinking about calculating all the offsets it would take to do that kind of stuff
With the modern EUD editors, I don't think they're calculating nearly as many offsets as you might imagine. Still some fancy ass work that I'm sure took a ton of effort
[2024-5-06. : 12:51 am]
Oh_Man -- definitely EUD

Vrael -- damn is that all EUD effects?
