First off: LoL is still under development. Do not take interpret this thread as me having lost interest in it. I will not start working on the game I am discussing in this thead until LoL is in beta, at the earliest.

I had an idea for an MMORPG (or possibly a combination MMORPG/AoS) where the players are descended from mythological gods. It will be about sons/daughters of the Greek gods against some other faction. I need help with designing this "other faction". Some ideas I have considered are as follows:

-The Titans. This makes sense because the gods did battle the Titans in Greek mythology. There is a big problem with this, however: People will go "u riped dat idea from percy jackson u nub u sux n should die bkuz u r gay u turd".
- The Roman gods. This is the easiest option: All I need to do is copy over the Greek classes and change names around, possibly with some minor differences and different animations. The problem with this is that the two pantheons are so similar that it would be hard to explain both simultaneously existing (especially regarding death). However, there's a very easy way to have dead players returned to life: Simply have Hades/Pluto "pardon" them so they can continue fighting about the other faction.
- The Viking gods. Probably the option I'm going with.
- Norse gods. Can't see any problems with this except for some similar characters (eg Thor and Zeus).
- Hindu gods. Risky because I might offend any Hindus playing the game.
- Monsters. Most Greek myths have monsters in them. The problem with this is that most monsters are unique: It wouldn't make sense to have two Medusas, for example. Also, I don't really want to have the players controlling mythological figures themselves.
- New figures. Extra-universal creatures could be invading or something. I don't like this option because it doesn't fit with the theme that well.
- Christian figures. This one I'm not using, period. It would be sinful: If nothing else I would be taking the Lord's name in vain.
- Hades. He was kicked off Olympius and probably isn't too happy about it. The problem with this is character death. I think you can figure out what I mean; I can't think of a way to explain it well.

What do you guys think I should use for the enemies of the Greek gods? Any of the above (except Christian figures)? Which one? Or something else? If so, what?

EDIT: If you couldn't tell, this is not going to be made in SC.

EDIT2: And Norm, stay out of this thread unless you're going to say something useful for once.

I would suggest Hades, And every god can die, so there are ways he could die, plus it'd be easy to have monsters for him. He can summon hundreds of thousands of dead people at will.

The problem with Hades is this: How would I have dead players revive on the non-Hades side?

You have a point with that, But if Hades is in battle/busy (I assume this), and not sitting on his throne, I don't think he would have the chance to grab the dead players. Plus, You could always make death interesting, and make players cross the River Styx and find a way out of the underworld and back into life.

He has servants to do it for him. Or something. Either way, in the myths, no one escapes Hades, even if he is busy at the moment they die. Having the players have to battle their way out of Hades is interesting but would give an advantage to Hades's team because it wouldn't make sense to make them do so.

There are multiple ways to escape Hades, one of them is Daedalus Labrynth, there is also the fact that one must have some sort of possession in order to cross the River Styx, so if they do not have that, perhaps they are sent back to life. I understand he has servants, But they are after the Styx, and farther up near Hades throne. Also, this could be an interesting boss: If you say 'raid' the underworld, Cerberus could be a boss for items. Not sure about this, but it could be possible maybe for The Fates to interfere with your death and bring you back?

I hadn't considered the Labyrinth, but it would take way too long to escape it if I wanted to keep it consistent with the myths. I don't understand what you mean about needing a "possession" to cross the Styx. Hades is still capable of getting your soul (I think Charon usually does it) even if he's busy. I'm not sure about the Cerberus idea.

However, your idea about the Fates intervening is interesting. I'll think about it.

I highly doubt you have what it takes to finish a MMORPG, unless you're using a premade game engine of some sort.

TZ has to many projects.

TZ, I have found a solution to the Hades problem!

God of flight, thieves, mischief, commerce, and travelers. Messenger of the gods. He showed the way for the dead souls to Hades's realm. Since Hermes shows the way, He can lead the heros back to life and keep them from going to the underworld! HA!

I really don't condone this. I REALLY don't. You have like way too many things to plan and it would be like anythign said would go to waste but still. Just do a war of the gods with ALL gods and their each individual "religion" or mythology or w/e as a faction. If it HAS to be two sides then make like 3 mythologys on one team and 3 others the other.

Have the good sides make up one team and have the evil ones make up the other. Ez money. Now delete this idea from your mind and go back to your other work.

Where does it say that Hermes leads the souls to the Underworld?

@above: I'm not interested in anything besides this, LoL, and a SEKRIT PROJKT I'm helping Polaris with.

I have some questions.

1. Will you use any network libraries or ready-made game engines? If so, which ones?

2. How are you going to get artwork?

3. Will it be 3D?

4. You'll need a server or two.

1) It will be browser-based, so I guess so.

2) My friends Maddie and Valerie are epic artists and would probably be interested. If they aren't interested, then I'll have to find someone on the Interblagh.

3) It will be "pseudo-3D" a la StarCraft.

4) byethost ftw.

Hm. Not many people will know that, though, which will be a problem. It's bad enough having to explain who Hephaestus and the minor gods are, which I'll probably have to do. >.>

You could probably put in a little description when you pick the god you'd like to be under.
