Is it possible to lock a file of any extension (.jpg, .txt, ect.) so that nobody can open it without a required password/code?

If this can't be done, is it possible to lock a regular folder, not a .zip or .rar?

Let me show you how to hump without making love.

Right click on the file, go to the Security Tab. Click Edit... Where it says Modify Permission. Then Deny the rights to other users on the computer and that should do it. That's the best way that I know of.

Happy Porn hiding.

This is a good thing but, There's only one user on my computer because people... don't like multiple users. Is there any way to keep a specific file from being viewed as thumbnails, small, medium, & large icons and only available as a list? And if it is attempted to be opened a password thing coming up to allow it? I know, this sounds like a lot, but still.

Bah, I dunno then man. I think theres a few downloads out there that will allow you to password the files up. You can always hide the file, but people can just turn on the 'Show Hidden Folders' option.

Well, I may just hide it. My family is WAYYYY too stupid to think about revealing the folder. Thanks for the help, though

You can password protect a rar, and use the "store" function.

You can also make a second user account, and have a password for the administrator. I think that vista should allow you to view the files if you then log on as admin after you've opened the jpg.

I have a password protected file of passwords lol. Download an application called "axcrypt" it works well for me. Basically you give it a password or a keyfile and it encrypts the file, which then can't be opened unless you know the password/have the keyfile.

TrueCrypt is another popular freeware encryption program, that'll basically do the same thing as said above. Are you trying to completely hide the file, or just deny access to it from other people?

Jan 3 2010, 11:58 pm Lord Malvanis Post #12

I want to deny access to the file to anyone using the computer. Please note that there is only ONE user on this computer, and that is the administrator user. There are no regular users, and everyone in my family uses the same account. I want it so that any file I wish cannot be opened/viewed without a password being given to allow that file to be opened. I will try TrueCrypt, Vrael your AxCrypt is very confusing and for me all I see is a decrypt.

I better explain how to use it, since it isn't like "SELECT FILE TO PROTECT" or anything like that, what you wanna do is start it up, hit Create Volume, select Create An Encrypted File Container, next make a .txt file somewhere, just an empty one, where you want your encrypted data to be stored, then select that file in TrueCrypt, check Never save History, and hit next, go with the default on the next page, hit next, make the volume size as large as the data you'll be storing in it, at least, then go to the next page, enter your password, hit next, leave the defaults and hit Format, hit Yes in the dialog that pops up, now close that dialog after it has finished, and you're back to the main page.

Once in the main page, hit Select File, and select that txt file, now hit Mount, and enter your password, now doubleclick the drive letter that data shows up next to, or look in My Computer for a new drive, enter it, and that is your encrypted data storage area, when you're done, hit Dismount, and your data you've put there will be hidden inside the txt file. Whenever you need to access it, simply mount it in TrueCrypt again.

You could put the files in a passworded ..zip or .7z file using 7-zip.
Really though, dude, it's better to just not store any pr0n on your computer. You've got the internet.

Axcrypt is a lot easier than falk's recommended program... you open "axcrypt2go.exe" find your file/files from the tree, right click and then click "encrypt". Enter your password 2x (for verification purposes I think) and click "ok" and it does it automatically. Then to reopen it you just doubleclick like a normal file and enter the password.

But yeah... no pr0n. Like doodle said.

I guess what I like most about TrueCrypt is that it becomes basically an encrypted folder, so you can put any number of files in there, and not only does it hide the contents of the files, it really hides the files themselves inside another file, so I think for secrecy's sake it's a pretty good way of doing it.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

Hide your files in a png.
Here's an example. It's actually a wmv file, which you can play in a media player after you convert it into raw image data using gimp or photoshop. It won't work as whoever made the image decided to use grayscale, resulting in a very large image, too large for tinypic.

With the modern EUD editors, I don't think they're calculating nearly as many offsets as you might imagine. Still some fancy ass work that I'm sure took a ton of effort
