Since it seems like a number of SENers play Dwarf Fortress we're going to try to get a succession game going. A succession game is where players take turns playing a fortress for a set period of time. You play your turn, compress the DF folder being used and upload it (to make it consistent), and the next player downloads to take their turn. The player tells the events of what happened during their turn from his/her perspective.

Not everyone is experienced with the game so a few things need to be decided before we get this thing rolling. First, how big a region should this be played on? Second, what should said region contain? Third, what should the population cap be? Fourth , should any modding be done (such as increasing the number of enemy civs, adding a race, applying a fix[Injured Cat])? Finally, what tileset should be used (if any)?

The default settings so far will be: A 5x5 region with as many features as can be crammed in with a population cap of 100.

And now for the rules:
  • No intentionally destroying/ending the fortress (doomsday levers aside) unless your the last one on the list. Unintentional gameovers are fine so long as everyone who wanted a turn got it.
  • You play for one year of game time. Seasonal saving and Pause on save will be on so no excuses.
  • No cheating. Reveal/Tweak/Companion off limits, AHK scripts are fine.
  • If you save scum start from a backup, don't want any NEMESIS UNIT ERRORS.
  • You can sign up for a second turn after you've successfully completed your turn.

Player list (will be ordered for turns once above is decided)
  1. Elvang
  2. MadZombie

If you want to join in on this then post here saying so, preferably with any questions you have and the answers to the above questions.

Add me.

Generally you tell the events of what happened from 'your' perspective, whichever dwarf that may be at the time.
Generally? So people don't have to write their story? Also, maybe you should post a link to Boat murdered as an example of how this is done.

What tile set will we use? I don't understand? Does it matter? We each have our own (or don't have any) tile set that won't affect anything but how it looks. I think it's okay to have different looking tile sets. BUT if we had to choose one then I'd go for MayDay's tile set. :D

Honestly I don't know if I'll have time. Also I don't know what scripts or mods are so yeah.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

@MadZombie: Some players tell the story from several dwarves perspectives due to... accidents with the one they started with. The tileset question is there just so the people can tell whats going on in the screenshots, I generally play without any tilesets.

@IskatuMesk: AutoHotKey scripts are just for automating stuff (like mass stone dumping) and aren't a part of the game. All of the creatures' raw files are .txts and can be edited easily, so generally anything thing that changes a raw file is a mod(Incredibly easy to add 8 arms to a species if you wanted, or set the boiling point of cats to 0).

The third rule seems redundant to me, of course cheating will ruin the game and make it boring, everyone knows that.

edit: If this is going to happen, please don't use the vanilla DF tileset. My eyes are bad enough these days.
Use Mike Mayday's tileset if anyone's going to do anything.

edit2: This topic should be moved to the Games forum.

I second the mayday tileset since I think that's what I'm using and I would become tremendously confused with a new tileset, since I'm still a relatively new player.

Set some more solid rules and set up a scenario that might add some spice to this game (such as making the dwarved live in the open air, instead of underground; or make the dwarves vegetarians).

Not sure if I have the time to join, but I have a pretty good chance of making it.

Open air dwarves ? if we did something liek that for example we would need to change the starting lineup. for example instead of starting with a usualy 2 miners you would start with 2 masonry guys to build walls and floors.

Tbh i think "winging" it is the best way to go.

Will changing the initial group of dwarves ruin the game in any way? The first player on the list can decide how the dwarfs are going to be situated.

Edit: Can a moderator please move this topic into the games forum? This doesn't really belong in Null.

Well it effect is entirely. Maybe you want your fortress to survive on caravans so you get no farmers butchers and plant gatherers and you have gem cutters metal smiths/smelters and craft dwarves. First player on the list decides everything. Isn't that how Boatmurdered went?

http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/chapter1-1.html just use their rules.

All this topic needs is players with decent writing and a sense of humor to make an interesting dwarf year.

Quakebells's ruleset sounds good to me.

http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=50413

Elvang better get this off the ground right now, or else this will end up as a wisp of a failed idea.
Make a new thread in the games forum, close this thread and lets get shit started.
