My ATI Video Card Won't Update

I am currently looking to buy a new gaming computer, but currently I have to deal with what I've got, and what I've got is a shitty video card from a shitty video card making company as we all know them as ATI. Nvidia GeForce for the win but right now I am dealing with an issue which I don't see is so hard to do but ATI just has to make things difficult for this to get done. I currently am running a ATI Radeon X300 Series video card, yes... that is an X300..., but it won't update and it hasn't been updated and is currently at version 6.4 and the current version is 8.1, or 8.2 if you look on HP's web site. But either way I need to get this stupid thing updated and I have tried downloading things right from the ATI site where I give them all of my information such as my operating system and my card model and they give me the download for the Catalyst which I tried doing that one too and I don't know if that worked completely yet either, and then I went to HP's main site and got the driver update from them and when I tried doing it that way it said that everything was complete but it really wasn't. Keep laughing if you must because I know this is sad but all I am trying to do is update my video card so I will be able to play TimeShift. And yes I know that TimeShift has the minimum requirements for a video card set for an ATI X700 but I don't see how that is such a problem because I know people that are using less video card qualities than that and it is working for them. Maybe this won't be the complete fix for my to be able to play TimeShift but before I would go back and return it I want to see if updating everything will help out at all first. Thanks for the help if anyone has any and be sure to laugh a bit in your post because I know this seems really stupid.... :(

I dont see whats so funny.. what OS do you have?

I'm using Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2.....

And the funny part is that I'm trying to run these games only using a small entry level video card... Half-Life 2 runs great for me at about 25 FPS so I don't see why TimeShift doesn't work...

Timeshift doesnt work (you get an error message or crash) or it works with low fps?

Here is what happens when I try to run TimeShift. A little window comes up in the top left part of my screen for about 1/4 second and then is disapears and nothing else happens with the game. I installed TimeShift on my mom's vista and I found out that the little window popping up was to say that "your video card is not up to date I would need to update it". Well of coarse my mom's vista uses GeForce so that update was easy.

What happens when you try to update your video card with the Catalyst Software?

maybe its the fact that according to system reqirements for timeshift you need a directX9C video card and the x300 only supports up to directx9 (according to wikipedia)
half life 2 is a dx8? game i believe
so i guess the solution is you need to buy a X1300 or a Radeon HD XXXX or a Geforce 7XXX+

Did that and it didn't help with updating the driver

Well if that is the case then that I guess is fine but why won't my graphics card update to begin with?

Did you remove the previous drivers with DriverCleaner BEFORE trying to install the new ones?

I did uninstall the old ones but that didn't seem to help. Let me get a screenie of what my Add/Remove programs looks like and you tell me what all I should remove...

EDIT:
Here is the screenie of my ATI section of Add/Remove Programs...

DX9c is the latest version of DX9. Any DX9 cards will run DX9c. HL2 is a DX9 game, but you can run it in DX7 if you wish.

.. If the game says it needs X700 than it needs X700...

Dont try running it with such a lower spec card.. maybe an X500 would run it.. MAYBE

Also.. Timeshift is overrated.

I don't care how overrated TimeShift may be, I'm still going to try and play it

Get a better card than I suggest... 8800 GTS or GT if you want to pay like 10$ less...

Even though the guy has vista, the suggestions from other people will still help you.

Timeshift is a lot more demanding than Half Life 2.
HL2 scales down really well.
I was playing gmod with an MX 440.
[I didn't know that was our card until my computer asploded]
And it worked fine.
It was funny when it finally got upgraded. The first thing I did was admire the water. xD

Ok... so let me get this all correct... I'm going to remove all of my ATI things from the control panel (see this image for all ATI things in my control panel) and then I am going to reboot my computer in Safe Mode (F8 during boot up). I'm going to run DriverCleaner Pro then I'm going to install the Catalyst Software Suite, which I got here from the main ATI site, which includes the new Catalyst, WDM Drivers, and the Display Drivers and I'm going to install them then in Safe Mode as well. Once that is all done then I'm going to reboot again into 'normal' mode and that's it? Please tell me if I have everything right here...

that should be right. In the link I posted, a guy says that there is only one thing you need to remove in add/remove programs, and that one should take out all the rest. check the link, the info was in there.

However, to answer your question, in Control Panel add/remove simply remove the item named "ATI - Software Uninstall Utility". This will automatically remove all ATI software including drivers and then prompt for a reboot
when you reboot, DONT FORGET TO BOOT INTO SAFE MODE.
