STARCRAFT II: Arcade - Blizzard's Arcade “Rock the Cabinet” Contest
--- mapmaking contest ---
Quote from Blizzard Entertainment
The Blizzard community has a long history of creating amazing games using our engines and tools. StarCraft II is no exception, and we’re constantly blown away by the quality of games that players create.

Now that the Arcade is free, we think this is a great time to encourage the creation of awesome games. We’re sending out the call: wow us with the most amazing Arcade games ever made using the StarCraft II Map Editor and Art Tools, and we’ll award over fifteen thousand dollars and other amazing perks to the winning entries. If you’ve always wanted to create your own game, this contest is for you!

The contest duration will be four months, ending on May 31, 2014. After a thorough review, we’ll pick the semi-finalists from the pool of entries and ask the community to help us decide on the winners. That’s right, the players themselves will narrow it down to the final five from which we will select first, second, and third place winners.

We’re looking forward to the variety of games that will be made! Here are the requirements that each submission must follow to be considered a valid entry:
  • The game must be in English.
    • Barring any legal restrictions from your home country and state, anyone is able to participate in this contest, but there must be an English version of the game.
  • The game should support at least one, but no more than six players.
    • You can make a single player RPG or a battle-arena game, but we don’t want the lobby size to be too big. Six is a good maximum for us.
  • Your game files will need to be uploaded as part of the submission.
  • The game must be published to the North American Region of StarCraft II using the map editor.
  • The game’s info page in the StarCraft II Arcade must have a description, at least one screenshot, and the ‘How to Play’ section must be filled out.
  • A forum thread must be created on our Arcade Game Showcase Forum with the following requirements:
    • The title of the thread should read “Rock the Cabinet: [GAMENAME]”
      Example: Rock the Cabinet: StarJeweled
    • A link to your game should be provided.
      Example (StarJeweled): starcraft://map/1/85968
    • A description of your game should be included in the first post in the thread.

Let’s talk about that last requirement that you create a forum thread for your project. Though this is something that must be done when you submit your final product, it’s really something we hope you’ll do from the start of your project. It’s a really good idea to keep the player community in the loop as your craft your masterpiece and get their feedback. Considering that the players themselves will have a role in choosing in a winner, it’ll be a good idea to hear what they think throughout the process.

Here are the prizes we are offering:
  • First Place
    • $7,000
    • Developer Jam Session
    • The first place winner will participate in a video conference with select members of the StarCraft II development for an intimate chat about all things game development.
    • Tickets to the next BlizzCon
    • Localization
      • Winners will have their game text localized in Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.

  • Second Place
    • $5,000
    • Tickets to the next BlizzCon
    • Localization
      • Winners will have their game text localized in Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.

  • Third Place
    • $3,000
    • Tickets to the next BlizzCon
    • Localization
      • Winners will have their game text localized in Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.

We’re really excited to see what the community will produce. Feel free to send any questions about the contest to Arcade@Blizzard.com. You can view the official rules here: http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/community/contests/sc2-arcade/rules.html

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

I've started a new project yesterday which seems to fit in quite nicely.

Just the limitation of 6 humans is bothersome for my plans, but no total hindrance. After the contest I would just raise it to support as many players as possible (current plans were 15 =/ ).

So, anyone else in here thinking about joining?

Very interesting!

I might try to think about something for this.

Interesting how it is NOT a criteria to have not started the map before the contest's starting date.

The player-limit is indeed too bad. I wish it was more like 8. Or even just no limit. >_>

O_O I was thinking I had no excuse to waste a bunch of time making another SC2 map, but this is quite the excuse!

I wish I could enter this. :(

Regardless, the free Arcade is incentive enough for me to finish my damn maps. Now to find the free time to do so.

We have updated the ruleset and now GERMANY, AUSTRIA, SWITZERLAND, RUSSIA, THE CZECH REPUBLIC, CROATIA, THE UKRAINE, POLAND, BULGARIA AND HUNGARY are included. Unfortunately due to many regulations for contests in different countries it is not always possible to include all countries though we would like to. Here in this case however it was a mistake that we didn't have those added from the start.

Seems I'm in the clear, but I'd have to be talked into doing this, personally. Blizzard may not be doing all the things I'd like, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and this free Arcade does sound pretty neat. Might do some maps for it later, contest or not.

I should point out that, because the judging only takes place among the top 5 most popular (by vote) entries, a good amount of this contest will involve 'selling' your map to other SC2 players.

There's numerous things I could say about this, but I've learned lately not to indulge in reckless (and possibly fallacious) opinions. Blizzard claims it's because of the laws of the indicated areas, but I'd feel better if they cited which laws, specifically.

Edit: Does the current bnet have player lobbies yet? That was one of the things that put me off, earlier.

Maps are uploaded to the battle.net server. When you host a map, the server creates a lobby with that map and you become the host. Games with open lobbies can be seen in the "Open Games" page. They are ordered in decreasing lobby age, so lobbies that really require some players are at the top. It also lists the genre, play mode and rating. The tooltip tells you the author, max players, amount of ratings and the map's description text. You can filter the list by genre.
So, there is no way to advertize your lobby in difference to its predecessors BW and WC3.

Sorry, I meant *bnet 1.0-style chat channels. I'm used to the term 'lobbies' from a different context. I don't recall these channels being present.

When you start SC2, you join a chat channel, I believe. At least I'm forced to enter the brasil one every time I join NA.

The channels list the messages and the users on the side. Each channel is in its own window that can be moved around, resized and minimized. Then there are clans and groups which contain multiple tabs in the windows.
So, it's more like a modern chat in the UI. It has some kind of timestamp message, too.

I'm assuming they've probably discussed that at some point. Or at least someone on their legal team has to have known about that.

Why would they consciously prevent people from accessing their contest, then? They do in some way insinuate that the states/provinces left behind would have been included if it had been possible.

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Perhaps because it is not as simple as that Reddit post claims? A simple Google search made it seem like getting a sweepstakes or contest to be allowed in Quebec comes with a ton more restrictions like:
  • Pay a fee of up to 10% of the sweepstakes' value, depending on who is allowed to enter.
  • Agree to allow the government of Quebec to mediate any lawsuits arising from the contest.
  • Allow the Quebec government to determine if the sweepstakes may be changed or canceled once it has started.
  • Agree to follow a number of other rules and guidelines based on the Quebec Sweepstakes Laws.

I'm pretty sure that Blizzard most likely weighed the options and found it to be easier overall by just excluding Quebec rather than letting the government get involved or pay the fee or whatever else it would entail.
