Error messages from bad code get cut off so I can only see the first 10 characters or so, and that usually doesn't tell me anything, are they stored somewhere?

None.

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

Use the debugger to get all their infos. It's in the editor's options.
If you right click an area in the debugger, you get a few settings. There you can set it to display errors and timestamps, etc or deactivate these.
