But I think that's worth something in itself - kids can't differentiate between sex and gender because we weren't conditioned to think of them as separate, and I would bet that many parents would be very confused still on how to explain the difference. A matter of better education? Definitely. But I must also wonder why the parents didn't see she's a she, and that her gender is unknown. It probably would've caused the same hoopla, and as you've stated, would deal more with their individual identity than their scientific identity.
