WARNING: The ideas brainstormed here were done by professionals. Do not attempt or reenact this.

----Anybody a fan of the Gothic series? I've beaten Gothic II around 7 times, and I'm working on getting Gothic III. The Gothic series is known for being big in Germany, and for having horrible bugs. Despite the bugs I enjoyed every second of Gothic II. The replay value was incredible, which is mostly what I'd like to capture. I feel that many SC RPG's lack the exploration value and side quests that PC RPG's contain. Many game test and reviewers agree that Gothics II biggest advantage over other RPG's is that the game changes to compensate your decisions. Every line that an NPC says is different depending on your recent actions, bounty, guild, clothing, and other world/NPC interaction. Everytime I played the game it was like I was playing it for the first time and that is why your reading this. Gothic II would be a great RPG to make for SC.

Taking StarCraft Modding to the Limit!

The main problem is that there are some limitations, such as locations or strings, making it hard to do as much as a real game would.

Well, You could reuse strings which would be kind of hard or use sound, that would be interesting. But hey I've thought about this too, you'd have to make about 6 maps to actually capture every bit and piece of G2. (1 map per chapter) I think thats a big problem, people trying to fit all these crazy ideas into a map and then they run into SC limits. Well think how great it would be to play a map without complex systems and lag? Thats wasn't being pushed to SC's limit? In my mind, that is a wonderful RPG. Plus, if you died or fucked up, instead of replaying the map over you can jump to the chapter you were at. Don't get me wrong, I don't imply this is simple, but I do imply it can be done.

Why wouldn't we just play Gothic II if we had a need for an rpg?

Because G2 isn't very popular in the U.S. where I assume most of us live. I just can't wait till Gothic III. Some say its better than oblivion. :omfg: but I doubt that.

I agree that SC RPGs would be more kick ass if they focused more on npc interaction and such, but the limits with SC1 are just that....limits.

I believe its nearly impossible to recreate anything of this nature due to the string/string capacity limit.
You map has merits, I believe you should start pre-production right now, get everything solid in terms of what you want to do in terms of story.
Then, when Starcraft 2 comes out, make it in there. It shouldn't be too much longer for it.
There won't be as many hard limits in SC2 like there are in SC1.

I know they are adding units like the Firebat into the campaign editor, so maybe they'll add tons of old units.
Then you could just make a map full of old units with 3d terrain.
Ok, I'm sure they won't add that many units.
Good luck on your map in SC1 though.

What is this thread for exactly? Just ideas on creating a Gothic II RPG or just on RPG's in general? If it's just RPG's in general, you can always think up your own storyline, even if it's cheesey, hey, who cares, it's a game. As for complex maps and the limits involved, isn't that part of the fun? Working around those limits?
When you mentioned "complex systems with lag" earlier, a good way to reduce lag is to not use "Always" as a condition in conjunction with "Preserve Trigger." That's what makes the lag.
