Tree's can be broken into 2 categories - Small trees, Large Trees
Small Tree's generally look the best... this was mainly brought over to the forums by "Payne" which was originally made on maplantis by CoB
For there on "Tempz" has begun making trees which were as large as possible while "Howler" has created smaller trees which frankly look better... but "Tempz" likes to go big or go home. Unfortunately its hard to describe trees in general (new trees so here's the basic steps and show examples)
Anyways without further ado here are some general tree tips and tree making skills.
Basic Steps of any treeCollapse Box
1)First you need a base of a tree
2)Next apply the top of it... usually the top of a cave entrance as show below the title used in the side end of a cliff (look at example below)
3)Place sprites (trees on top)(could include winter trees [shadow] or bushes, jungle only trees to show its longevity [growth])
4)Place roots [optional](mandatory for small trees excluding first tree shown below)
Larger trees need bushes so that you can't see the blockiness
Basic TreeCollapse Box
Here's the basic tree just 2 cut of caves side by side
with a couple of sprites from badlands...
Cliff Trees Collapse Box
There mainly called cliff trees due to the fact they use cliff titles as there main trunk, this is probably the only shown here that has roots without bushes and uses minimal sprites.
Use Of Bushes
Bushes mainly serve two purposes, make your tree look more ripe and hide roots for large trees

None.
1) CoB was the first to make a big tree, to me. I took mine from him, at least.
2) Fix your "i" to "I" please. So "ill" -> "I'll".
3) Make it less
personal.

Ah, nice to see you made a tutorial on tree making. I am a fan of your trees, though a problem when trying to blend trees, the bigger they get the blockier they become. Also, it's very hard to incorporate roots when you want very large trees. This is why I decided to blend using less tiles (smaller trees). Though it limits the complexity of the tree a bit, it can easily be made up for with only ~5 sprites to give it a very realistic branch network.
also, when I discovered how to blend like this, I started with the very top two mirrored tiles...so you don't necessarily have to start at the very base of the tree (ground).
Also...cliff trees? lol is that what we're calling them now?
None.
what do you mean less personal?

I, in fact, meant to remove as much as possible the reference to yourself as a first person talker.
Try to use third person to stay as objective as possible
