This is a project dedicated to converting Starcraft's campaign maps for use with multiple (2) players, hopefully with very little actual change. Zerg mission 2 "Egression" is already finished, and downloadable. Player 2 controls the 6 rescuable Hunter Killers, while player 1 controls the base, and all of the triggers affect both of them.

At the moment (12/12/08), this project is far from done, with only one of 30 maps converted. (As of 1/02/09, a lot more have been finished.)

Several of the maps will need quite a bit of work, to support two players. For some (Zerg mission 4, for example), a base will need to be set up for the second player, and more expansion points will need to be made. Some triggers will have to be edited for two players as well, and non-multiplayer-compatible actions (pauses, for example) will have to be removed and worked around. The Zerg ambushes in Terran 6 "Norad II" and the Dark Templar escapees in Zerg 8 "Eye For An Eye", are on timers, and should probably loop, as well.

At the end, this project will be released in two versions, a light mode, with only a few sounds for effect, and full mode, with all the briefing, cutscene and in-game sounds. After this, I'll start on the Brood War maps, and maybe the 'Enslavers' series.

If you'd like to sign up to help, just say so, and I'll PM you the map. It's already set up with the non-story sounds (Zerg 8, for example, has Daggoth telling you your Overlords are out of/in place, but not the briefing, nor the cutscene sounds) and should work fine with one player. The maps are .scx format so they can support color-changing (certain maps should have both players colored the same).

I'll convert the maps where you start with a few units and can't build more. (eg. The Jacobs Installation, The Amerigo, etc.) After I get those done, I'll do the early Terran missions. PM the maps to me, please.

Oh, do you mind if I take a few "creative liberties" in the conversions for balance/funness? eg. Giving P2 a (somewhat nerfed) Defiler or something in The Amerigo?

EDIT: Maybe we should put a message at the beginning of every map saying "Map conversion: Grand_Dracolich and <whoever converted that particular map>" or something like that?

I don't think the in-game credits are neccisary. I don't really want to take credit from Blizzard, and while it's pretty tricky converting them like this, it was likely harder making the maps in the first place. There'll be a list of contributers in a .txt file with the maps.

As for the creative liberties, try to keep the gameplay as close to the original map as possible, but there are some maps where you have to change things a lot to support two players (Terran 3 will probably end up like that). Also, the resource count for main bases might have to be increased, and more expansions might have to be added, for missions where players would have two bases.

Also, I just decided to pick up Zerg 6. Should be pretty tricky, but it's doable.

Ah, sorry, I'm used to seeing the Archon hero's name XD. Fixed. Which Terran missions are you doing, by the way? I wasn't sure exactly which missions counted as 'early', so I sent you the first half.

Then I'll do the first half. That's kind of what I was thinking.

And no biggy about my name. I wanted to use Tassadar/Zeratul for my name but I couldn't.

Missions 1, 2, and 3 completed. Beginning 5. I'm trying to set it to divide up the Antigan base (the one you rescue) between the two players.

EDIT: I just looked at the Zerg mission you did... It seems like the Hunter Killer player would get really bored, really fast... Maybe give him the starting Mutalists (maybe hero-iffy them), a Spire, an Evolution Chamber, and implement a resource-sharing system so he can upgrade his stuff? (Maybe give him a Lair/Hive so he can get a higher upgrade level, but get rid of the Larvae or give them to the other player...)

EDIT2: Maybe the Hunter Killer player could also control the Drone with the Chrysalis?

I was able to test it on Friday with a friend of mine, and I was actually quite entertained (as the Hunter Killer player). Though, I was able to clear the map with just them the day before. :P

Anywho, got the maps, I'll take a look shortly.

Terran missions 1-5 completed. Send the next few missions (the next 3-5), plz.

Maps sent.

I just finished beating the entire vanilla Starcraft campaign (FINALLY), so now I'll start working on converting more maps. I'll take Protoss 9 and 10, right now, along with the map I'm working on (I can tell, I'm gonna have a fun time playing 10 with my friend MageOfMystra, lol).

Edit: Protoss 9 and 10 are done. :)

Woah. That was fast.

Does anyone have any ideas for what to do with Norad II? I'm having trouble. (That's the one where the Norad II crashes and you have to get Raynor and two Dropships to it.)

Thanks, it went much faster than expected. Not many triggers in either map, but I had to beef up the starting resources and expansions for both maps, since both players have to set up bases and armies.

You might be able to set up a very small, unestablished second base for the second player, in the expansion north of the base. You could set up another mineral field in the top-left corner to compensate for the second player (and I always found it useless that there were units there and bland terrain).

On another note, we could certainly use some testers for this! At least two, who can test these maps out every now and then.

I think it's cool that you're doing this, but I kinda wish you had started with Broodwar, since they're harder and would thus highly benefit from having a teammate. So yeah, I agree, just try to keep the gameplay fairly the same without introducing much i the way of new elements (like a unit that shouldn't be used yet). Also, for missions involving units only, consider making the number of friendly units larger, and THEN splitting them, cuz it's hard to coordinate people especially with lat involved. In other words, even though you have another mind, the fact is you're likely to send units in poorly =P. Just a thought.

Above all, have some ppl test them that have recent experience of the normal versions, to see if they notice anything potentially flawed. Oh yeah, and I hope you don't intend to make them also work as 1-player only =P that'd just be silly.

And yeah, I'm sure my gf and I would be willing to test some/all for ya =P we've recently gone through the first campaign. We skipped most of broodwar missions for story alone tho =P.

You, sir, are damn lucky. :P

Thank you for offering to test. As soon as a few more maps are done, I'll send you a PM with them.

Sounds great =P. She expressed interest in that.

And thanks, I like to think I'm lucky, but she does need encouragement to keep playing sometimes lol. She's on sen occasionally, actually, keeping track of her own thread on zerglings' appearance in sc2, as she feels strongly about it =P as do I.

G_d, should we send Striker the completed maps to test with his gf?

Just sent over eight of the finished maps that should, to the best of my knowledge, work fine. Several of them should take a while to finish playing, so I didn't send over all of them, just yet.

Edit: Oh, and I'm picking up Zerg 10. I have a fairly good idea how to make that one work.

Edit2: Zerg10 done. By the way, if you notice two things spawning, with the second player, when only one is supposed to, please tell me so I can fix that.

We've tested and pm'd back the results of 5 of 8 files. And yeah, 2 didn't work right... sound string wise i guess. You can just copy the pm to Tass or whatnot.

We can test for difficulty differences later. Right now I'm just going for obvious differences in that, or bugs, or concept flaws or possible flaws.

Dec 19 2008, 12:18 am Phobos Post #19

Are you sure about that?

Oh God, I have to finish that storyline before Grand Draco gets too absorbed in this! :P

This looks good but... But I have nobody to play it with :P
And, as it seems no one else has done so already, I am going to say, good job and good luck with this

You can always test it with me if we're on at the same time, Fubus.
