So, this may look like it should be moved to Null, it is Serious Discussion, don't worry.
Alright, so I've been getting into a band lately called "Tool" they aren't particularly mainstream, though they were on MTV when they actually played music videos >.> They have unusually metaphorical lyrics, they're hard to understand and interpret well, there isn't a right answer, it means something different to all people, so please don't insult/flame people for a different view (They do it on YouTube, and I can't trust people on internet forums either ) Some of their songs seem like something obvious and perverted (Stinkfist, for example) it's usually not what you think it is, you'll need to look deeper. They're, well, I don't do genre labeling, but they are 'Metal', so if you don't really like the genre, don't listen to the song, I was merely wanting interpretations to the lyrics. And, without further adue; here are the lyrics (Plus the video, though it's unusually weird, so if your one to judge a band by it's videos, don't watch it, if you get the song, it makes sense though) Also, song is Schism, by tool. I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing, Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication. I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down No fault, none to blame it doesnt mean I dont desire to Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over. To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication. The poetry that comes from the squaring off between, And the circling is worth it. Finding beauty in the dissonance. There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away. Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting Ive done the the math enough to know the dangers of a second guessing Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion Between supposed lovers Between supposed lovers. And I know the pieces fit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo&feature=related As a side note, the video is much, much harder to interpret, I don't really get it myself, but if any of you do, feel free to share. I thought the song described relationships in general, the pieces being the parts of the relationships, and not just ones between two lovers. He knows they fit because they fell, in essence, it's broken so it must have worked at one point in time. The due to crumble thing means that they won't work out if they don't talk about it. The point the finger blame the other, that refers to how neither spouse will take the blame sometimes, and how they constantly blame each other, though you can infer that by the line before it. That's all I'll say right now, I'll wait until your comments before further posting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Tool videos are kinda easy to understand, you need to think abstractly, the Jambi video especially. The song is basically about watching out for what you wish for, because you might just get it. In this case, the brothers wish to be seperate, but they realize that without the phyiscal bond, they are no longer one. So, one of the brothers starts working on a machine to combine them, he works himself to death, and ends up being nothing more than a demented piece of meat when he tries to test the machine. At the end of the video, the still living brother dresses up the demented one, gets their child, and lays with them all to sleep, and in doing so, he gets as being one as he ever will be again. The alien one for Schism is all about the lack of communication, inducing the failed experiments that they have, the removal of certain body parts (Nerves, ears), all because they no longer need communication any more; it doesn't work anymore (Rediscover communication). Atleast, that's how I always assumed it was (Parabol/Parabola has me almost senselessly lost though -.-) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I've listened to multiple songs by Tool and the only one I even remotely enjoy is Euology and that's after the 7 minutes of stupid introduction, and the interpretation of that is quite simple, christ... no christ... I find that from what you're saying, is they arn't deep, just twisted and you don't understand them. I think the reason you don't understand them is because they just pulled random ideas together and put it into a video, this creates the illusion that they have some kinda deeper meaning / alter ego, when really they're just like everyone else, except they have expensive instruments and a little bit of talent.

Most of the songs Tool made were events that occurred in their life. Wings for Marie pt 1 & 2 talks about his (maynard) mother being paralyzed and still having faith in God even though he has done these things to her, while Hooker with a penis talks about how a punk kid said they were selling out. Hell those are obvious if you just read up some and listen to the song.

Whoa, whoa, wait a second, didn't I just explain 2 of their videos? That means that they do have a deeper meaning, they aren't twisted, atleast not by my understanding, they're just more abstract. They don't put random ideas into the video, you just have to spend more time thinking about it as opposed to some more straightforward bands. LuLz at the Euology comment, they do have some pretty long introductions, though they do have a deeper meaning, sometimes about past events in their life, at others about life in general, or the lack thereof. It's kind of an acquired taste >.> Errr... I can't -.- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
