a left leaning coexistence nut

I'm going to rant. Please don't take it seriously.

I honestly think ME2 sounds like the dumbest game of all time - and I say that literally. I've sat in my boyfriend's room, listening to his younger brother play the game, and all I hear are cut scenes...five minutes of shooting...another cut scene...five minutes of shooting...another cut scene. Also, there seems to be a lot of launched probes, I'm not really sure what that's about.

So what exactly is the point of the game other than awesome graphics? Really. . .

It's an RPG game set in outer space.

I think it's an open rpg(ish) Fallout and Elder scrolls right? in retrospect ME2 looks awesome but i have yet to hear any of the IRL public (my friends, friends friends, tv, etc) even talk about it. Had I not searched for it my self i would not know their is even a ME2.

I don't like how its.... an exact copy of star wars without the jedi's! Its the same creators as nights of the old republic
Really think about it.

You only say that because it takes place in space. There are no light sabers either, which is pretty much a hallmark of Star Wars.

no i am saying that because the story line is similar, even the look is the same.
Aliens+ Human allies ( A really big city where everyone goes )
Thousands of planets!!! Even the government is very similar.
but that's not what upsets me. Its because its the same creators as star wars and its pretty much the same game with different characters, they wanted to go away from the star wars because it was not their original idea so they made Mass Effect to be the exact same.
but Its a good game ><

I'm also assuming that Star Wars had an ancient race that preceded all races at the same time and was wiped out by sentient machines, along with mysterious droids that re-animate the dead and worship these sentient machines, believing them to a deity? You're just being way too nitpicky about it. Would you prefer that the game had one planet instead of thousands? You're telling me Star Wars was the first movie to use thousands of planets in a galaxy? It was also the first movie to show that aliens and humans can co-exist? How are they the same characters? Who is Obi-Wan, who is Anakin, who is Luke Skywalker? Seriously, with this kind of attitude, we mine as well agree that everything original is just a copy of something that came before it. It's how they put the concepts together that make it unique.

Hear me Raor!!

The Citadel council's decision not to fight the Reapers, much resembles how the Jedi Council were timid to act against the Mandalorians in the Mandolorian War.

The spectres can be said to be like the Jedi acting as the Council's will, out of the usual remit of the normal policing authorites. Saren could resemble a renegade jedi turned Sith, betraying the Council.

The True Sith resemble the Reapers. Both are beyond, the remits of known space, with few knowing what exactly these ancient, powerful forces strive for or that they even exist. Both are a huge potential risk to the known galaxy.

If KOTOR III was made, much like how there will be a huge war between the Reapers and the Citadel Council in Mass Effect 2/3, the True Sith could invade Republic space potentially for a similar epic showdown.

Arguments against that is unlike the Reapers the True Sith don't obliterate all advanced life every 50,000 years. The True Sith seem to be more subtle.

there are some ><

Both have a ship that serves as your command base, which is also state-of-the-art, relatively small, and very maneuverable
Both use that area as a staging ground for selecting a planet to visit, and an area to chat with your team to get to know them.
Both allow you to get to know your team better through in-base chats, and they're unlocked as you complete story threads.
Both have Carth, though in ME he's called Kaidan and whines only slightly less, and serves once again as the romance interest for females.
Both have Jennifer Hale featured prominently, as Bastila and fem-Shep respectively.
Both feature the concept of a True Evil super power from beyond the reaches of the galaxy, this super evil can warp minds to their will (note how people were "changed" around the Mandalorian wars... etc etc, and the Reapers indoctrinate).
Both have a limited number of fleshed out story locations.. though ME has fewer central locations with fewer quests in them really (you can complete all the Feros colony quests in a couple minutes by running down a hallway) (KoTOR: Taris, Korr, Man, Kash, Dant; ME: Citadel, Feros, Noveria, Vermire)(I don't count Ilos/Unknown as fleshed out)
Both feature an alignment system, KoTOR has good/evil, ME has good-cop/bad-cop
Both have a gambling game based around incrementing a numeric value to get as close as possible to 20.
Both feature a female blue-skinned alien ingenue
Both have killer robots

and like i said before.. this is more KOTOR Compared to ME... Not the movies.

Honestly all the is different is you have a lot more guns instead of swords!
but like I said its a Good game, It just upsets me that the same game creators think they can make almost the same exact game, and call it new. ( They should of kept with KOTOR as their space epic and gone about something else for another game. " And they are making KOTOR III I believe too. "
and its suppose to be some kind of MMO ><! If they were so confident with ME they would of made it the MMO but they know that star wars has the true credit to the space game.

The genre is called Space Opera.

Yes it is influenced by Star Wars but only as much as any other space-based RPG, and it probably appears more so to you because Bioware developed both KOTOR and Mass Effect, causing them to share features. Personally I am happy that they moved away from Star Wars and created an interesting space franchise of their own.

They also made Dragon Age, which is not a space game, if you're looking for something less futuristic.

It is similar to KOTOR, honestly all of BioWare's RPGs are fairly similar.

Although honestly I enjoyed the characters and universe of Mass Effect more than KOTOR's. Maybe it's because I don't really like Star Wars. :P

Okay...what's the plot?

Commander Shepard is investigating the disappearance of human colonies. It turns out that the colonists are being abducted by the Collectors, an alien race who are acting on the behalf of the Reapers (the antagonists from the previous game). He needs to assemble a team and find a way to fight the Collectors and stop whatever the Reapers have planned.

Launching probes is a way to gain resources and if you want to get all the upgrades, yeah, you're gonna have to launch a lot of them. I was rather obsessive with this :P

I really enjoyed the universe the game was set in, I really got the feeling that there was a world beyond just what gameplay required. I even sat and read the Codex entries to learn more about the various races and technology.
The characters were interesting (for the most part - looking at you, Jack and Miranda >:| )
Combat was fun, definitely an improvement over the first game.
Most of all though, the game felt really cinematic to me. I was engaged, I became invested in my decisions and felt like I was really making a difference in how the story will play out in the next game. (Far more than ME1's choices)

I'm actually doing another runthrough (Paragon this time) to see the other results. This is one of the few games where I've actually been interested in doing this.

Wow...that's a blast from the past. Its funny, because I used to read a lot of Space Opera works on dA when I was active. Actually I was part of a huge collab that was supposed to be a universe-wide Space Opera...it was awesome to write for before it crumbled on itself. It was my favorite genre, both to read and write. I guess I need to get back into it.

The plot does sound interesting. I guess my problem is that Sheperd seems static...is that wrong?

Feb 11 2010, 9:26 pm Neki Post #17

Shepard's personality is completely controlled by your decisions and choices, so I suppose you could play him as a character who never changes then. :P

It's funny, because when I started playing, I was a complete asshole down the Renegade path, putting humanity's interests in front of everyone else's.

But as I started talking to my teammates more, I felt bad about screwing them over, so I ended up making more Paragon choices. :P

I ended the game with like a 40-60 Paragon/Renegade split. I lost 3 teammates in the final assault too, which sucked :(

I don't know, being a renegade involves randomly killing people and being an a-hole, I don't know if I could do that for the WHOLE game. Like seriously, it's like "I'll let you go, or the other choice, I WILL KILL YOU." I can't imagine killing everyone I see, lol.
