I cannot understand the video game industry anymore. Ever since the review from Game Informer gave this game a 5.75, which was a totally unprofessional review in my eyes even if the score is right, this game gets harsh impact by casual gamers. IGN UK gave this game a 8.5, which is nice. GameSpot gave AvP a 5.5, which is by the reviewer I hate (Since years ago): Kevin VanOrd, who replaced the awesome Jeff Gerstmann (In which, I am waiting for his Giant Bomb review).
I don't understand why people are complaining the Alien's controls, and calling it clunky. First try, I was dizzy while playing the alien, but then I got used to it. I honestly don't think it's clunky at all, especially if you turn on auto-transition. Speaking of which, it's all about learning curve. People playing as Predator have a tendency of running around in the open rather than playing stealthy, which is the Predator meant to be played as.
This game gets mixed reviews of either being bad or great. Which I can assume people who are casual gamers versus players who gives this game a chance plus probably loves the franchise (either game or movie) for years.
I'm still getting this game on day one.
EDIT: I am satisfied with this game. I seen only one path finding issue from the alien during the Marine campaign. And oh boy, after playing it, I would really love to pick on the bad reviews on this game. I don't mind about the "outdated" graphics, but the gruesomeness and trophy kills makes up for that.
I enjoyed it, it's like literally back to the classic genre of first person shooter. Though I sort of wish I wanted the crouch feature, but not like it's useful at all during multiplayer. This game does NOT need Iron sight, despite the gun at the bottom right corner of the screen alone is already accurate. Though I don't like the Ranking Matchmaking system, but it seems to be decent. Infestation ends way too fast for some reason, but still fun nonetheless. Predator Hunt is fun and lasts pretty long. It's sort of hard to rack up kills as Predator due to being completely outnumbered by people who can see you in their radar whether Predator is invisible or not.
I also like how difficult the game actually is. Both Modern Warfare 2 Veteran and Halo 3 Legendary is nothing compared to the Marine campaign I went through (And I wasn't even playing the hardest difficulty). Damn the facehuggers! The melee system of rock paper scissors works really well and balances the three races. Though I hate how Predators instant kill me, or how I spawn and die immediately. Boss fights is not the highlight of the Marine campaign, but the story fits well as it is connected to the films. And I like the reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Melee and Shoot combo works well and could prove a challenge, unlike Call of Duty where you just stab and that guy is dead, or how a melee from Master Chief can take down something taller than him. On the Xbox 360, rather having the melee as right thumb stick or B, it uses the bumpers. I always wanted to have bumpers to be melee attacks for a long time in first person shooters at Xbox 360, and Aliens vs Predator did that first. And it establishes well when used. Multiplayer is well balanced, despite that Predators are a bit tough to fight against one on one when they have equipment capable of one hit or two hit kill, or how Aliens can use his tail. So far, the score of three teams in Species Deathmatch, regarding through players being experienced, I noticed how each team has a score nearly tied. One faction can win just as much as the other two is capable of winning regarding on how many players they have on each faction.
I don't understand why Game Informer and Kevin VanOrd from GameSpot complained about the controls of the Alien, and called it clunky, when in fact requires a learning curve. I never really liked Kevin VanOrd from GameSpot in the first place, especially how he replaced Jeff Gerstmann. Kevin VanOrd said bad level design. I know what's bad level design or not because I've made FPS maps before. The Marine Campaign feels like Doom 3, only with the flashlight on the shoulder, until the jungle part. I didn't try the Alien Campaign or the Predator Campaign yet. What I don't like about the campaign are the collectibles, though it's nice to hear some audio diaries. The multiplayer maps are designed pretty well, though I noticed they came from single player. The one map with constant changing environment, where it opens walls, alters staircases, and such was alone pretty awesome.
Survival is nice, though one of the map feels too easy while the other seems rewarding because after each wave, it opens a door. Though I don't like how there is no respawn in survival (Unless I'm missing something here). Though friendly fire is really unrewarding in survival when turned on. Best to turn friendly fire off.
Personally I believe Species Deathmatch alone is already nearly perfect. I just don't like the spawns where I can die afterward.
