The Terrans are a constructor ship and escort on their way to construct a new warpgate to Polaris, where there is a high concentration of mineral asteroids. On the way there, they run into the Ix~, a zerg-like biological race. The Ix~ follow the Terrans to Polaris, looking for minerals to chow down on. The J++ are a race of cyborgs who, having lived in Polaris for millennia, fear the humans are invading. They attack, decimating much of the human fleet. While the human fleet is weakened, the Ix~ attack again, wiping out all but a few humans. The human commander orders several ships to stay behind as a distraction, and tries to rapidly build a warpgate with his Constructor. The gate is only part finished before the commander is forced to run. He retreats behind the J++'s lines, and lands on a planet to try to rebuild his strength. The J++ try to fend off the Ix~, but lose ground quickly. The Terrans make a break for the J++'s warpgate in the system, while the J++ must fend off the Ix~ before running themselves. They find themselves in a star system near the J++ home system. They have a few minutes to build a defense. The Ix~ quickly follow, but the Terrans and J++ destroy the gate before the entire armada can make it through. Now, they have to defend from the Ix~ using only what they have built already. The J++ call for reinforcements, and the Ix~ are soon retreating. They create a warpgate, which several J++ and Terran warships follow them through. They find themselves in the Ix~ home system. They establish a small base, but are quickly discovered by patrols. Now, they are in a joint offensive to destroy the Ix~ home system. More Ix~ forces keep coming in until the center coordinator of the hive is destroyed. The hive is destroyed, and the Terrans head back to Polaris to build their warpgate, and head home.
