I play the saxophone and the flute. At the end of high school, I thought I was hot stuff for my age (I knew I wasn't professional or anything, but I'm sure some of you can relate) on the sax. Then I went to college and started practicing and actually giving a damn, and I realized how terribly wrong I was. I even realized my embouchure had been wrong all along (I used to bite my lower lip). I learned about the nice things like overtones and some alternate fingerings, started practicing the sax growl, learned why my tone was shitty, ect. In short, I learned that I was not in fact, even close to good, or even close to where I should be on my way to good.

I'm curious, are there any other sax players on SEN? If there were it'd be cool, could help each other out with stuff and all, pass around some sheet music maybe, or the notes for some interesting/funny tunes, w/e. I started on the alto, but it got pretty beat up so I bought the keilwerth on ebay, and I love it.

Good saxophone players are a dime a dozen. Learn to play a real instrument like the sousaphone.

I used to be good on euphonium, but then switched over to sousa and decided I didn't care enough to be good. In truth, it's simple to be a good player: play a whole bunch of etudes. I never practice outside of class, simply because I don't need to and I don't need to sound that good. 12 years of playing tuba/euphonium is enough for me.

I played the alto in concert and marching band and tenor in jazz band. I'd given both up when I entered college. They teach us to cover our bottom teeth with lip, but I'm pretty sure there are a number of embouchures for different styles. Unfortunately, I've not really practiced in a good 2 years.

I played alto tenor and bari sax when I was in high school. Since then I haven't had time.

I actually play trombone in my high school band, and I know what you mean about practicing. It takes a lot of time, doesn't always feel the best, and it's hard to get results you want. That's why you gotta keep at it I guess.

I used to play trumpet in middle school, and played on the piano at home. I was pretty good at both (I think), but dropped 'em when I got to high school.
