This is a large single-player RPG-esque map in the bare sense that you have a hero who is on a quest.

The "hero" in this case is a Hunter-Killer class Zergling that was bio-engineered by Duran and abandoned to roam around. Named "Zydrail" (Zie - Drey - Ull), he eventually found his way to the Koprulu Sector (he hijacked a Battlecruiser, which slowly became infested over time). Now his ship has crash-landed on an unknown planet (to him, at least), and he must find transport off the world. Luckily enough, he finds a Dominion-sponsored Terran exploration base a few clicks west from where he crashed.

The base is lead by a "Max deFance," and the other Terran presence (a terrorist group known as the "Red Sun") is causing trouble (raids, etc.). They recently stole a megaload of valuable information (compacted into a single Data Disc, of course) and hid it somewhere in their stronghold to the East of the Dominion base.

After much explaining on both sides, Zydrail heads out to recover the stolen data and basically blow the H.Q. to hell. Of course, this is all in-game (and as such could be considered "spoilers"), but since no one from my organization has an account on this site... well, you know. ^^

This may or may not have an accompanying mod... for one reason.

Zydrail eventually finds several forms which he can take, and they all have different portraits! >:(
So I may end up making a mod that does nothing but change the portraits, but then again I may not. I'm lazy sometimes.
Before I show off my few screenshots, does anyone know if there's an Infested Crashed Battlecruiser model I could use? Thanks.

SCREENS WOOHOO.

The crashed Battlecruiser, with Zydrail sitting there idle waiting for some triggers to run.

Zydrail converses with the Terran guards...

...and then with the Terran leader...

(quick shot of the Terran gathering area)

(some ambiance and side conversations add depth to the map)

...and FINALLY with the informant (white Vulture) in the outpost to the south.

Here, Zydrail gets a com-link installed to his ear.

Final conversation between Zydrail and the informant.

And now, the objectives screen!

Zydrail ransacks the Red Sun's outpost.

And what does he find? Goliaths!

C&C on the storyline is welcome, along with suggestions, praise, etc. :)

Happy mapping!

this looks really interesting. And a bit comedic too. The terrain is a bit bare though.

None.

So you just have one zergling? That would get really boring, really fast.

None.

One question... What unique features set this 'RPG' apart from a custom scenario?

None.

Yes, you have one Zergling, but you unlock other forms.
Case-in-point:

In normal RPG maps (the ones that I've played, anyways), you either have one hero that goes with a band of other players' heroes and you get 255 upgrades so you can stop the swarming enemies and defend your H.Q., or you have one hero that goes on a large quest chain and eventually wins (if you're good enough). The latter is sort-of what mine is. The twist is that you get to morph into/infest different forms.

One question... What unique features set this 'RPG' apart from a custom scenario?
Well, besides the morphing/infesting part, you interact with the other units. I was actually thinking of awarding Minerals for kills and Vespene Gas for quest completions, the former of which would be used for recruiting others and the latter of which would be used to upgrade, but I'm not sure if I'll do that or not. This is going to take me a month or so, so I'll have a lot of time to think about my options.

Thanks for the questions!

Will the players be able to use special powers?
Will the players be able to obtain items to use?
Will the players be able to wear equiptment?
Will enemies drop a random reward?
Are there boss battles?
Can you 'level up' by killing enough enemies?
How does one change forms?
I saw the unit named Terran Goliath, are you going to be more creative in your unit names?
Will there be an epic plot twist?
Can the player do side quests or mini games?
Any secrets? Cool weapons?

None.

Quote from Norm
Will the players be able to use special powers?
Yes, the player will be able to use Psionic Storm and Disruption Web, as well as certain others.

Quote from Norm
Will the players be able to obtain items to use?
Unlikely. I don't do inventories very well.

Quote from Norm
Will the players be able to wear equiptment?
No. See above.

Quote from Norm
Will enemies drop a random reward?
They will give Zydrail Minerals, and nothing else.

Quote from Norm
Are there boss battles?
Yes. At least three have been confirmed.

Quote from Norm
Can you 'level up' by killing enough enemies?
You gain Minerals for killing enemies, except bosses. You gain a shitload of Minerals and a single Vespene Gas when you kill bosses.

Quote from Norm
How does one change forms?

The beacons represent the morph locations, and the units on the beacons represent the form.

Quote from Norm
I saw the unit named Terran Goliath, are you going to be more creative in your unit names?
It's called a "Terran Goliath" because that's what it is. Also: why would I make it the "hero" version of the unit when you don't always gain forms for the story?
Name:

Quote from Norm
Will there be an epic plot twist?
There will be twists. How you see them can depend on your disposition to the map.

Quote from Norm
Can the player do side quests or mini games?
Side Quests are a must. I already have two planned, and half the first one is completed. Mini Games? I'll go talk to my pals about that one.

Quote from Norm
Any secrets? Cool weapons?
Secrets: Definitely (e.g. Forms, extra units/heroes, CHEATS ZOMG).
Cool Weapons: Not so sure what you mean by this. The morphs themselves are cool weapons, and you get powers, but other than that, no.

And, holy crap, didn't even see this guy post. :P

Yeah, the terrain isn't final (of course). I just threw it together for screening. And you can't see it, but there are two thin rivers. :D

As for the comedy... Well, let's say I have a good sense of stupid humor, which comes from being around my friends all the time. Being in my school helps, too. :P

Just here for the pie

You said that you wanted to make a mod for it that changes the portrait of all of your forms to the same thing, but you can do that via triggers. Of course, you'll still have the portrait as you click enemies, however. I'd think that your different forms should have different faces. Anyway, this map looks nice. The side conversations could be interesting, but make sure you don't waste too many locations with them (just detect when the units are at your center location, but I bet you already did that). Also, is your friendly town going to build, or just stay how it is and mine minerals...?

Yeah, the enemy thing was what I wanted to be changed. I'm using the same portrait for everything EXCEPT the final morph, which will use its natural portrait.

Quote from lil-Inferno

GOLIATH FACE WTF. No, I'd change it on all Terran/Protoss morphs, or at least most Protoss ones.

O.o No, I didn't do that.

Well, it wasn't meant to expand, and I have something planned for it later on. Building would get in the way of that... >.>

Thanks for the interest, though. I think I could release an "Alpha" version of it for a select few to test, if anyone's interested.

Moar screens!

Science Vessel side conversation.

Outpost aftermath text.

Zydrail cleans up after destroying the Command Center.

En route to the base, Zydrail encounters several more terrorists in an ambush.

Excerpts of the farewell between deFance, Vinny and Zydrail.

Will there be spells of any sort? Each form could have individual spells that you can obtain later in the game. Without some sort of spells, this game could get dull :\

None.

I meant other than the default ones. Are there any that are going to be trigger based?

None.

May 3 2009, 5:37 pm Pr0nogo Post #13

Probably not. If I can get my coworkers to do something, then it will happen, but they have their hands full as it is.

May 5 2009, 4:25 am stickynote Post #14

In the farewell screenshot, I assume that means that you've covered all the area that you will be covering in the map, and in the minimap, it looks like there is a fair amount of unused space. Is that just incomplete or are you just not going to use it?

None.

Well, jeeze, sorry for the late update! I put these on the other threads in the other forums. :P

Shots of Zydrail's Dropship.

It leaves Dominion territory and continues on.

It enters Zerg territory.

(I apologize, I took the following screens with Apocalypse active because I needed to kill something via Function Five and I'm also sleepy due to the fact that it's 2:20 A.M. at my place)

Shots of the Zerg "swamp" area.

GUESS WHERE YOUR NEXT QUEST AREA IS!

Problems:

Zerglings recieve the "Devouring One" classification.
Hybrids are mixtures of both Zerg AND Protoss. :P
You use a series of comical, childish words. "Megaload" for example.
A battlecruiser getting infested by a zergling is saying that I could take over a planet with 12 hydralisks.

I'm glad this isn't your map viet because the nit-picking restrictions you are trying to set would make it lame.

There's nothing wrong with it how it is...

Your micro just isn't good enough if you CAN'T take over a planet with 12 hydralisks :D. A zergling taking over a battlecruiser is more believable than the death star being blown up by 1 missile.

I hope to have a megaload of fun when I play this!

He's a Hunter-Killer class, mate. That means he was used as an assassin by Duran.

There's a campaign on Campaign Creations that has a 4-year-old Torrasque hero that's been renamed and reworked. He's a Terran/Zerg hybrid. Ever wonder why Zydrail could speak? (note: his voice is sort of obscured by the guttural nature of his Zerg mouth)

Quote from Vi3t-X

I actually don't remember using that (not saying I didn't, just saying I don't remember it), but how is this a problem? Comedic relief in serious maps is bad?

Quote from Vi3t-X

Because Zydrail's a normal Zergling, and because I ever said he never had help with it. -.-'

My alpha should be coming out soon enough, for those of you who want to test it privately. :D
