Poll 1: Who would you kill for?

Imagine yourself in a situation when a person A you know is is danger and will die if you don't kill some other person B you don't know almost anything about. To avoid any sex-based choices, assume that A and B are of the same sex. Also assume A and B are of the same age. That's all you know about B. For simplicity, assume you can kill person B without ever meeting or seeing him/her. Think of it as a 'press the button, person B dies'. The question of this poll is how close to you must person A be to make you save them. I've ordered some words commonly used to describe closeness of human relations:
acquaintance < pal < friend < good friend/boy-girlfriend < best friend/boy-girlfriend < best friend/boy-girlfriend/spouse/parent/your child

Some relations like 'best frind' and 'boy-girlfriend' appear more than once, because some may value their boy-girlfriend on the level of their good friend, while others will value him/her on a higher level. Obviously, if you'd kill for a 'good friend', you'd kill for your 'best friend', so all categories have 'and above' added so signify that.

If your 'closeness scale' is different please adjust to the poll accordingly. If it's so radically different from the one I suggested, just don't vote and post your reply in the thread.

Poll 2: Who would you die for?

Similar question, only this time it's you who must give your life to save someone. You will die of a heart attack, which is not such a bad way to die if you think about it... especially after reading the torture topic.

I wouldn't kill anyone for anybody. It's stupid that people think of killing someone when they can just torture someone forever.

I could only kill someone to save a friend if there was causation. Essentially, if I was defending my friend from the other person. Otherwise it's completely immoral to kill someone innocent and I would feel way too responsible.

At this point, I wouldn't die to save anyone. I could see that changing when I get married and have children.

I would kill for a possible child, but I perfer my own greedy soul.

I'd Kill for only 3 or 4 of my friends, and only if it benefited them in the way of letting them not die if i did not kill.

I'd die for a couple of people, mostly friends.

Given the way you put the hypothetical situation, I would 'kill for someone' rather easily - if a close friend (3rd option) is definitely going to die unless I kill someone I don't know, I'm definitely going to do it - this of course given that I am actually convinced my friend/gf/etc is actually in mortal danger.

Dying for someone however.. I think that's stupid. If it is someone I care about, I honestly think it is the conscientious thing to go last. Dying is easy, especially in that manner, and dealing with loss isn't. If I am going to care about someone's death, I sure hope they would care about mine, and so I think it would be selfish to 'die for them' unless there were some extenuating circumstances.

My choice would be mostly dependant on the opinion I have of the person being saved. If they seem to be more generally good for the people around them and themselves, then I would be more inclined to saving them. A depressed man who constantly pisses people off and doesn't seem likely to contribute to society, on the other hand, would be likely to die.

Mostly what DTBK said, with some possible exception based on my reasons stated above ( how useful I think someone is to society isn't necessarily perfectly correlational with any emotional attachment to me they may bear ) . It may, to some extent, depend on what the person being saved knows ( if s/he were to know that I'm making such a choice, and what I choose, the outcome would suddenly have a possible strong bias towards saving him/her ) .

I actually don't value my family higher than i do my friends. I would much more value the life of a close friend than anyone in my family

but, im not sure what i would do. i hope i never end up in such a situation, however, theres only about 4 people who i would kill for. those are my absolute closest friends, of whom i dont know how i would get along without

would i die for them, that depends on the situation. seeing as that im athiest, it'd be pretty dumb of me to just die, call me selfish but i'd rather be alive than dead cause then i wouldnt be able to enjoy life at all

1: Acquaintance and above~~let's face it, all I really need is a lame excuse to go on a homicidal rampage. And screw "press the button, person B dies". I want to put to the test [heh, mythbusters reference] some torture methods. And maybe even finding out if you do indeed die [like rats do] with not enough sleep.

2: Nobody. I don't mean to sound selfish, but I wouldn't give my life to save my girlfriend's. The only person whom I would die for is her, but how close we are would make living without each other, after knowing that one loved the other enough to give their life, far more painful and lasting than pretty much any way to die. Unless it's a split-second reaction, and then I would probably do it without hesitation. I agree with Tootfariy; I sure as hell wouldn't die to save my family.

EDIT: I would also kill to have the mineral system reinstated, and infinite minerals in my account

id only kill if it was me kill or them be killed, in which case itd have to be a direct relative or someone i loved/cared for very much, on the dying side im down 1-2 notches for best friend or good friend and up =P, though im a massive intellect and would likely find a way out of it.

But I don't have a best friend... I have acquaintances and I have friends, there isn't really any gray area.
... I guess friend and above. If I know nothing of who I am going to kill, then I have no reason to care about them in any way.

If they had a lot more going for them in life than I do/would, then I'd choose for me to die (assuming, of course, that's what they'd want... And I don't want to sounds totally selfish ;o). Otherwise screw them, I'm going to go get a cheeseburger.

I'd kill whoever seemed more like a jerk.
I would not die for someone I was close to, because if I die, were no longer close, if they die were no longer close, nobody wins.
I would die for someone who was better than me at most everything. So far only one person has ever matched that criteria.

I myself would both kill and die for 'my best friend and above'. He is definately a person worth saving.

I also know two girls that are only my acquaintances, but since they are althruists, I'd kill and die for them, even if they wouldn't approve that.

I don't understand this poll a'tall. "Your child" is probably the only one most people would die for, yet it's lumped in with a bunch of other choices people wouldn't die for. Now I don't have a child, so I can't exactly say yet... but yeah. I don't get it.

Your child is in the same category as your spouse and parent because not everyone has children or a spouse. You must adjust to your current situation.
