Retribution RPG

Last updated 11-01-08

Green = last updated

Discription;
This RPG will be based on the choices a player makes. That means the end and everything from the beginning to it is diffrent when you make other choices. Do not expect OVER NINETHOUSAND diffrent endings, because it will probably have around 5 diffrent ones. I've had my thoughts about creating such a RPG for a little while, and since I got 1 year I think I got enough time to do it.
The rpg will, and can only be played with 4 players, divided in 2 teams. Basicly a good and bad side. But thats partly depended about the choices made. The choices made will be controled by a 'Yes' or a 'No' when asked to act.
Your character will level by fighting monsters (increasing the hitpoints, armor and damage done (usuall stuff)) But will also learn spells, This is done by a dropship you click the spell you want to cast by ''drop unit''.

The Story;
To the west lie the kingdoms of the civilised world. To the east a line from north to south of tribe villages who live in the forest and swamps. There has always been conflict between them but never had been a big scale war between the factions. The tribes where known for their pillaging of towns and villages. Although the effect of that the pillaging where no more then increasement of guards, there never was a big scale war. The reason for this was that the tribes where no friends of each other either.

500 Years ago a man walked the swamps, lost, confused. He was the only survivor from his raiding party. As he walked through the swamps he swore that he would destroy the western kingdom before he would die. Eventually out of the cold, the mud, the restless days and a hundred other he collapsed to the ground. Laying on the ground he sweared he would never rest until the world would burn and his enemies would be at his feet. Then a demon appeared. He had been following and listening to him in the last few days.
He said he would grant him the strength to do what he swore, if in return he would serve him after his death. Having little choice he accepted the pact. The man was known by the name Shatang.

The tribes themselves only consisted out of warriors and hunters. There were no real leaders beside village heads. Shatang who had become a powerful sorcerer showed his powers to the villages and told them they had to submit to his will, telling them he was send by the gods to be an instrument of retribution and destroy the men to the west. In return they would be their own lords, no longer be suppressed by the humans of the west. Tribe by tribe joined, one by one the western men fell. And eventually after a long campaign capitol of the west was burning.

Shatang, a barbarian with more intelligence then the average one, didn’t forgot the pact he made several years back. He knew that eventually after his dead, he would be a servant to a demon for eternity, and everything he had accomplished in this world would be for nothing. With the help of a young renegade wizard from the west, by the name Damones he eventually found a book in the libraries of the fallen kingdom. He read in the books that within the dungeons of the library there was the secret the eternal life. He went down, and the only thing he found within the dungeons was a waiting demon he knew from a several years back.
The demon was furious. “So, you have changed your mind after all, and yet you still want to keep the powers I have given you? Even Though you didn’t broke the pact, Who will stop me from not punishing you? You may have the world at your knees, but that ends here!”
Both Shatang and Damones lost their powers. Damones was able to flee from the demon, he fled to the woods. And was not seen again. The demon turned Shatang into a statue, and took his powers away.

A group of loyalists stayed at the ruins and defended it from the men who tried to retake it. Eventually being outnumered they fled but awaited the return of their master. The remaining tribes returned to their homelands and remained there. The men from the west who were shattered all over the world also returned to their homelands and rebuild their kingdom and villages. In that time they made sure they would never go too much to the eastern border. The tribes went to the east, and the wizard went to the meadows of the north, and was never seen again.

Gameplay;
As I mentioned before, there need to be 4 players to play this rpg. You play your part in ''Acts'' or ''Chapters''. Beside making choices yourself, there are parts where your choice has effect on other players. To make the story is being played together, you have to wait untill everyone has finished his chapter. And not if a player goes afk and gets behind.

The Terrain;
The Terrain will be made in SCMDraft, and Im definatly trying to make somthing special about it. Today I've start working on it, and its clearly unfinished, but it gives an idea what to expect.

Sounds cool. Choices = good. However, I must warn you: it makes some scenes very annoying and difficult. Like the scene I'm currently working on, you can help this town kill this other town, but if someone else decides to attack the town while you're away attacking the other town, then I need to trigger you running back to kill that player, then there's 2 more possibilities because you can either win or lose that battle, all the while the other town is trying to kill you which you can win or lose also, and it snowballs like that. SO! Choose your choices wisely or you'll end up in the same funk that I hit.

Yes true, I should be carefull... But before doing all the "quests" by triggers. Im making a word document where I'm going to type out every scenario. I hope thats the key to avoid those problems.
And thanks for replying :)

I also updated the thread.

True, picture 1 is better. But I was working too detailed. It was taking too long because if i messed it up I couldnt redo it easily. So instead im trying to make the terrain the basic way, and then draft it.

It's really hard for me to have an opinion on whether or not this is going to be a successful project. I would really like to see some more screen shots and some more details on the storyline. However, it does please me to hear that their are two opposing teams that have a series of paths that will ultimately effect the outcome of the map. I hope you will provide more information as the map progresses.

When you say that we need 4 players, does that mean that if someone leaves mid game, everyone else is screwed?

If this is indeed the case, then I don't think many people are going to ever be able to play through the entire game.

Yes, basicly your screwed(for the moment). but fear not!

I have played RPGs like WoW and GW(Guild Wars). I think the concept of GW fits StarCraft rpgs more. The diffrence between those two is, is that in WoW you dont have an objective and you just do quests where ever you see it. In GW Your just doing your "Primary Quests". Now I have played StarCraft RPGs where you dont really have a goal, or atleast dont know what to do. You just walk around, and those arn't my kind of rpgs.

The way you will do your quests will be by a Beacon with a map revealer on it. So you know where to move to.

The RPG isn't going to last 4 hours or somthing like that, rather 1,5 hours. So make sure that those you play with are no leavers.
After I find its done and the game happends to last 2+ hours. I'd probably put a save game in it, or make triggers for if people leave.

And today I'll add the story, and make more screenshots.

Well, if it's a competitive map, and one team is doing badly they'll leave anyway, since they're going to lose, unless they care about the story or something, but there aren't many people that I know of who play a map to lose, or to let the other side see their story. (probably). It's your call, but maybe you should change it up so that all 4 players aren't expressly required, maybe you could play with just 2 but the computer gets harder or something.

Another piece of advice (if you think its any good is another matter) from a fellow choices-in-rpg-maker: Writing it all out is never a bad idea, but getting the actual triggers done is better. Don't spend too much time planning unless you really have no idea what you want the scene to be like. I'm not saying don't write it out or plan it well, I just mean, it's pretty easy to think "Okay I want the temple mage to speak with these guys after they have brought him the item, get their reward, then choose whether they kill him and steal it, or accept their reward and leave, or whether to accepot his next quest" but it can take a while to write the triggers, test it for glitches, find out that somehow they can choose before they get heir reward because you've made a single little death count error, then you test again an realize you spelled 18 words wrong, ect ect. As long as you know what you want (for the most part), the story shouldn't give you many problems. The triggers might.

First of all thanks for your reply, I really appricate it since I havn't done somthing this big before.

If people online join this game and play it, it will be more a story rpg then actually killing creeps all the time to level. And have the ultimate show down whenever they feel like. They really need to play their roll (beacon system as I mentioned) to continue. The thing that I think that will make this RPG fun, is that its up to you how to play it in a diffrent way your used to.

This isn't going to be an RPG on wich your leveling to get stronger, and when your stronger you can proceed do this or that. I think you can compare it to a movie but now you make the choices. But ofcourse extra things are added so your play the game and not only make choices. I know that triggers can be a pain and make it seem that it will never work. But since I have 1 year time, I dont think it's a bad idea if I first type out all the choices, text, and story, since its the most Important thing. Also there wont be quests like; "Go there, kill him, give key"(In the way your used to).

So thats kinda the way I see it.

If this rolls out how you plan it then it looks like it'll make for a very interesting game. I'm looking forward to this getting done.
