I am going to college in roughly a week and I am beginning to be scared honostly. I come from a small town, where our school size was only about 100 people... (That was grades 7 - 12) And to even begin to think about being in a classroom with more than 10 people is very intimidating... Any been to college on here that can offer any advice to a small town Canadian? :D

I am in college.

a) Time. Make sure you have full control over it. Do not Party too much (LAN parties are an exception ;) )
b) Professors. Talk to them, get to know them. Normally they like students who come to them for help
c) Friends. Make LOTS of friends, then u can help each other on homework

Alot more, but those were just some of the utmost fundamental stuff people have been emphasizing upon last year.

My college only has about 2000 undergrads, but surprisingly only like half of us party and stuff. None of my friends actually party, unlike those idiots which get wasted every single night. I'm on the first floor of my dorm along a road which leads out of the campus into the ground, so I see at least 100 people going out from around 9PM-12AM.

I was pretty nervous before I started college. But once you've been in that first class for about 5 minutes, you'll feel fine.

So if I have a 2.1 WGPA, and I'm taking almost all honors courses this year (this will be my sophomore year), and I do a lot of extracurricualr stuff, and I also went to summer school, and I get straight A's this year, can I still make it into Princeton?

Not fine, more like 'when the hell is this class over...' :P

Unless it's an awesome class. There are, from time to time, those.

I wouldn't count on it.

Who screws around their freshman year? That's what senior year is for :P

My brother went to the Citadel, which is a military school. The first time I talked to him since he left, he said this:

Me:So how's the Citadel?
Him:it sucks
me:why?
Him:its not very fun

I laughed, and felt like sharing it.

The best thing you can do to make up for it is get some nice scores on SAT I/SAT IIs.

Grades are school-dependent enough that colleges actually look more at test scores.

Im in college now. I've been in college for like 2 weeks. Yes, it is scary when you don't know what to expect. But once you get there, its not all as bad as you think. I was about 30 minutes late for all my classes, and nobody gave a damn. Besides the freedom of college verus high school is notible. College is way better than HS, just try to relax.

I swear, the professors/lecturers in small classrooms must practice continuing a lecture uninterrupted when 3 people walk in noisily :)

I've seen teachers not even break their sentence when people come noisily late to class.

If you learn the material, they seriously don't give a damn.

The sword and the faith

Why should they? If your learning the material, good. If not, thats fine too because its your money your spending to be there.

Thats what i like about college. Its no longer the 'I HAVE to be here against my will which makes me feel very hostile', its quite simply 'Im spending a good deal of money to be here and if i fuck up its my own fault.'

Where do you think your taxes are going? That's assuming you go to a public school.

Sep 4 2007, 8:35 pm Doodan Post #19

I do believe that minors are required by LAW to go to a school of some sort. Once you're an adult, it's totally up to you (many colleges also receive parts of their funds from taxes). You're required to pay taxes, too. Saying you pay for public school is about the same as telling a cop that you pay his salary. Technically, it's true, but see how far saying that gets you. ;p

I dunno; it really depends on many things. I don't know if it'll work for colleges like Princeton, but if you do not make it to Princeton but are truly adament about attending that university, then what I'd do is for the first year, go to another college (preferably easy but not too "low standard") and get straight A's. Make sure that when you register for classes, you not only look at your college's cirriculum, but you also look at Princeton's cirriculum for the major you want. Then you can make sure that all your credits will transfer properly and not fall too far behind. Transferring from another college IMO is much easier than getting admitted as a freshmen.
