Hello, everybody.

First off, let me tell you what I want to have..

I want to make a website for my XC/Track teams. I'm thinking of setting up a server onto my computer, not thrilled about the idea however, as I would have to run 24/7, etc. Perhaps I can ask the school for a computer to run the server on. We'll see. My experience in this field is next to none, just so you know.

Anyway, if I were to run a server, it'd be on XP, since, although I probably use Kubuntu more than I use XP, I am much more familiar with XP than with Kubuntu, and taking it one step at a time would help me.. ^^

Anyway, my first step would to be getting an Apache server set up, right? If that's the case, could somebody aid me through the process?

Second, I would need to know web programming, right? I don't want anything fancy, I just want something a little better than this http://arlingtonxc.com/ I want my site to have the same function as it, basically, but look nicer, etc. I'm assuming that would take some sort of photoshop/web design skill. Anyway, I don't want to really learn/deal with web programming and/or web design, so if anybody could ever help with that or something, that'd be pretty cool, but I'm not expecting much.

So with that being said, lets walk me through the Apache process. I think I've made up my mind that I'm going to use a .co.nr domain.. =\

http://www.wampserver.com/en/
It will set up apache, php, and mysql.... automatically. I've always liked wamp for my local server...

If you want help doing things, you could set up an ftp server to your html folder and give out the ftp info to people you know won't screw up the files... and it could be like a community project ;o

I heard of WAMP, however, I don't think I need PHP or MySQL for this project, would I? It would be a rather simple site. But Apache set up for me is good. =D

Not for a quick site, no.
Though, deathhawk, php (and css) can make your life a hell of a lot easier with just some simple code for a html wrapper. Such as SEN doesn't need to have it's menu and header images and shoutbox on every single html page, each page just gets those automatically.

If you make one page or set it up how you want it or give me some basic info and any images (like team pictures, your schedule), i can start it up for you if you go with php.

For a quick site, like my own, I'd use Yahoo or Google to make (recommend Yahoo) and just fix it up a bit with some CSS and some custom HTML editings, like I did, it's quite simple.

Falk, no offense, but your site looks horrid.
It's nice for how you laid out the data you are putting there... I give it props for that.
But the colors and images just make it an eyesore.

PS: WYSIWYG editors always suck.

I see. Well, it's a shame I don't have much experience in web programming. Argh... :(

WYSIWYG editors probably do suck, however, I don't really have any other option if I'm not skilled programming wise/web design wise, right? Frontpage and Dreamweaver are WYSIWYG, right?

Finally, thanks for the offer for the PHP, but I think I'll try to stay away from that if possible, because I want this to be simple, and I think PHP would be too much work.

Dreamweaver is only WYSIWYG if you only use the output view. The code view has sexy things like automatic tag ending/closing, syntax hilighting... Mmm...

If you can get Dreamweaver 8, I'd recommend it to do HTML (not sure if it supports PHP).

Dungeon Master

Notepad+HTML and PHP ftw.

And if you can use HTML in combination with PHP, for example my website uses mostly HTML but a little php for some extra features that would be very difficult (or harder at least) to do with plain HTML. So use PHP where needed, I say.

Meh, I guess I have a weird taste, but I guess I wouldn't want a forum looking like that :P. The main reason people don't like it is all the stuff I personally added, like the backround, I had to manually edit that in, basically I'd only recommend using those editors for just laying things out like text and images, they are useless at anything else.

Ultraedit has syntax highlight, code collapsing, in-page bookmarks, multiple clipboards, function lists... plus so much more.
Anyone who (seriously) codes in notepad is just being an idiot. You don't get brownie points for making things harder on yourself :).

Relatively ancient and inactive

I use Dreamweaver. If you want a free one, check out PSPad or Notepad ++. For a simple site like that, all you really need it HTML and hopefully CSS (you can do same stuff through HTML, but it wouldn't be really allowed by W3C rules. Just supposed by nice (but not all) browsers).

I R BAK.

I can deal with the web stuff later, I want to learn how to set up an Apache server. I've got it installed, that's about it. I think I want to practice setting up a server and put phpBB on it.. anyway.. help appreciated =D
