The long complex gas route at the top is purposely made annoying as hell. Once you have enough gas you can start upgrading your units weapons. The long and annoying route of getting gas is to control how many ups you can have at any given time. Example: In the current setup, ups are 24 gas +8 per level. (Notices the multiples of 8?) This helps me balance the map so that you cant over-up as ups will be VERY important. The assimilator has the build time of 4 battle cruisers, further helping me control the map. Its all about balance.
