It looks like the most awesome Windows ever. It's mainly a user-interface release, so as not to break compatability with old apps/hardware. That said, the new interface looks awesome.

The build being shown at PDC is going to be the first public beta build. The one being given out at PDC is different and doesn't have the same taskbar. :(
THoughts?

It looks like vista? Its doesn't look like its gonna be a huge jump from vista and probably isn't worth my money to upgrade.
This first look just says UI changes and nothing about performance. :-_-:

PDC is still going on. All the in-detail articles won't be written until the end of the day. And the new interface is really quite awesome. It's the big change since the taskbar was created.

Interesting. Like Johnny said, it seems nothing than a UI change and some "Look, convience!". Seems like a "Windows ME" to me.

Do you know what Windows ME was? Your refernce to it makes no sense at all.

Windows ME (to me) was a small graphical update of Windows 98'.
Windows XP Media Center was a small graphical update (again, in my opinion) of Windows XP Professional.

There aren't many changes, other then the fact that the UI is changed.

On a side note, Windows Azure was also announced yesterday.

2000 is still the best of the Windows operating systems. I would love for them to top it but that's not very likely seeing as Windows 7 is still a massive hog despite their numerous changes.

So, this is like Vista only that the UI pwns and chews up even more processor speed?

Windows ME was the last OS to use the Win 9x kernel, yet tried to implement features found in NT kernel. It was unstable and buggy. It's not just a UI change, but that's the biggest (known) feature.
Xp Media Center was just XP Home Edition with Media Center. Vista Home Basic:Vista Ultimate::XP Professional:XP Media Center, except it's not quite that analogous.
Azure's lame.

How is it a hog? How would you know without using it?

It's faster than Vista.

This is actually kinda impressive, although it looks as if they're pretty much just starting to copy Mac, I was really impressed with the ability to quickly switch windows and such.

I assume that this is not going to be another ME, my opinion is that Vista is the ME, and this is the new XP, one reason is because they have already introduced a way to immediately transfer from XP to Win7, rather than forcing you to buy an all new machine.

I'm also happy about the removal of useless bundled software that was always with Windows, and lemme just say, I don't plan on downloading Windows Live. :P

The thing I don't really like about it, is the hiding of the tray icons, this means that programs like quicktime that I never use and try and preload themselves to save a precious 3 seconds of loading time can hide a lot easier than they could before.

Overall, I think it'll be a good upgrade, as long as they've learned their lesson from Vista.

Its still impossible to make it an embedded OS, and this came from Microsoft themselves. I'll post my source if I can find it.

It's set up so that it doesn't give much priority to windows you're not using, unlike older versions, so it ends up saving a lot of processor time.

I don't know Falkoner they have been talking about coping another Mac ''feature'' where with each new release you have no backwards capability with older releases.

They have also said that this version is going to be what Vista was suppose to be meaning all the flashy effects and such from longhorn.

If so then that means what I heard about needing atleast a 512mb graphics card and atleast 1 gb ram.

This is all rumors though so you never no.... Besides why should I care I am not even using Windows...

You don't have to, but some people do.

Longhorn is Vista's code name. All the "flashy effects" were fully implemented. Whatever source you get your information from is full of bullshit. 512MB cards aren't cheap, and aren't required. The current requirements are 1 Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM. Sinofsky showed a netbook with those specs running Windows 7. It had just booted at 50% memory usage.

@Chiui: So what? It's not a phone OS.
@Viet: Nobody but Microsoft has the latest build shown at PDC. No benchmarks exist.
@Falkoner: Tray icon lets you hide things you don't want to see, like your AV. New icons will probably default to being shown. So you would manually have to hide Quicktime to hide it.

Saw a multitouch demonstration today. It actually looks pretty cool. You can assign your own gestures to specific functions. It actually looks non-gimmicky.

hrm *clears throat* That was humorous. No version of windows has been as good as OS X or Ubuntu.
They have been playing catch-up for years, copying everything they can get their little grubby hands on.

Also, I have proof that Microsoft is run by Nazis.
