First of all, I need a program or a website that would give me a summary of my computer. Deathawk helped me with this many months ago but I lost it. I am trying to customize this computer so I can play better games and it runs better. I am planning to buy new parts on newegg for a new motherboard and a video card. All I know right now is that my computer is really crappy, bought for 200$, Celeron, 224 mb ram and 2.8ghz. Is it even possible to change a celeron into a gaming computer?

Alright, click Start > Run > Type "DXDiag" without the quotation marks. Windows comes with it, so you don't need to download and install anything.

Some (unfortunately dire) words of warning. For $200, it sounds like you bought a Dell, HP, etc. They often use their own form factors as opposed to ATX, which is the standard right now (and for the foreseeable future). This affects your motherboard and power supply as well. Most likely, you'd need to buy a new case, power supply, and motherboard. Building your own PC is a pretty easy experience, and I've built a few and fortunately had no problems with the hardware, though I've heard some ugly stories about troubleshooting.

I don't know what your budget is, so I'll try to give you a decent yet inexpensive list of hardware to purchase:
Cooler Master Centurion 5 ATX Case $50
Antec 430 Watt PSU $60
Gigabyte Intel P35 Motherboard $95
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz CPU $200
2x1 Gb G.Skill DDR2 800 Memory Kit $75
Either: eVGA 8800GTS 320 Mb $290
Or: eVGA 8600GTS 256 Mb $160

You can save your hard drives and DVD drives from the old PC. Total comes out to $770 for the 8800GTS or $640 for the 8600GTS.

Thanks Felagund I needed that myself.

I just want to change my video card and my motherboard.
Here is my computer information.

No point in changing your motherboard if you're not changing your processor. Besides, I don't even know if you can change your motherboard because of some weird form factor that only that company uses.

I've found they tend to stick to miniATX or microATX.

I've only seen one or two fucked up form factors.

How much is a good but cheap processor? What is the name of it?

Sep 14 2007, 8:47 pm ~:Deathawk:~ Post #8

AMD and Intel both offer decently affordable processors.. There is an AM2 AMD Athlon 64 x2 4000+ for a very decent price on Newegg, heatsink included. Intel offers a new Pentium line based off of the Allendale core. You can pick up the LGA775 Intel E2140 on Newegg for 75~ dollars.
Felagund was pretty on top of things in that build, however, I would purchase instead of the Centurion 5 (I have the Centurion 5, btw.) if you can afford it, and aren't afraid of rebates. It's worth it.

Does my information that I posted affect anything on buying those processors, motherboard, and video cards? I don't want to waste money by finding out that it doesn't work with my crappy ass computer.

Sep 14 2007, 9:17 pm ~:Deathawk:~ Post #10

Well, which processors/motherboard/videocard are you interested in buying? You would have to buy new RAM, most likely. You may need to buy a new powersupply too, depending on what you buy.

Sep 14 2007, 9:26 pm Echo Post #11

Actually to simplify what I want to do, I just want to upgrade my MB Ram to atleast 512 and have a better video card.

Sep 14 2007, 11:02 pm Sael Post #12

Give us a model number and we'll be able to help you. Besides, that case was just the first decent case I saw. I didn't spend a ton of time looking at cases for you because there are like thousands on there, though I did spend I'd say probably at least 5 or 6 hours searching for the case I use right now (and will probably use for future builds): a Silverstone SST-TJ07-BW. It's pure sex.

Personally, you'd be better off saving your money for a real build, but if you insist... a model number will help us out greatly. Your PC probably doesn't even support PCI-express, maybe not even AGP either, and that limits your choices greatly to... graphics cards from three generations ago if you only have PCI, and some mediocre graphics cards today if you have AGP. So yeah, $700 will give you a good gaming computer.

I think you should do a complete rebuild of your computer(Every single part replaced) and 512 ram cards are not that good....2x1gb cards are good(you will have 2gb ram)

I am a Mathematician

Yeah, I know you probably don't want to hear it, but you'd be better off starting new. :\

That would probably cost me hundreds.
I think it is just better to just ebay custom made gaming computers because they sell them for atleast 400$.

It would definately help us if you would tell us what your budget is for rebuilding this computer. We could throw out a two thousand dollar rig, or a $400 rig. So, how much cash do you have ready to drop on a new machine?

Sep 16 2007, 6:26 am Echo Post #17

I currently have 110 USD lol.

You're not going to get very far with 110 dollars, but I think you knew that -.-

Some advice: get a job. : )

Sep 16 2007, 8:36 pm Echo Post #20

Yeah, I'm currently trying to get a job but I'm too busy right now.
