Just Here For The Pie

Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 10:17:51 PM Central Time:
My modem loses the internet for the first time in years..

Tuesday, September 09, 2008, 12:00 PM Central Time:
My television loses guided arrow cruising, menu, and On Demand..

I use Comcast for both these products.

My internet has had a mind of its own ever since the time listed above. It decides when to be able to be used. Comcast's theory of unplugging the modem for 30 seconds does not work. I even went to the extreme once and left it unplugged for a whole day. No help at all. I swapped cables but used the same port to no effect. I unplugged the splitter that I use for my television and went with a direct line for no effect. I tried a different port in the house to no effect. I took my modem to my friend's house where I swapped his with mine, and it worked there! I ended up finally calling Comcast sometime during the first week of September. After telling the situation and history of the problem, I was put on hold where I was soon disconnected by them...

I do not know a lot about this next problem since it just occurred last night, but all my cable options are disabled on all three cable boxes I have in my house. I still get all the movie channels and the other channels I we pay for, but it feels like I've been pushed back into the 80s having to look at each individual channel to see what's on.

Without a doubt, I'll be giving Comcast another call soon, but this time it will not be a friendly customer concern. These people are evil deviants, and it is really starting to get on my last nerve. Many-a-times I have wanted to smash my modem with a hammer, but I have held back the urge.

Anyone have some suggestions/ encountered these same problems/ any answers?

Comcast is indeed evil.
I think the option that will save you a good bit of stress will be simply switching services.

My router here has lost internet service a while ago, but that was due to a mix-up with the payment and user accounts registered with the service.
A quick call to my ISP and giving the problem some time fixed it.

Calling customer service and slowly solving the problem would probably give you the best results, unless if the answerer to your call is a douche.

We live in a society.

Are they doing or was there any sort of construction/repairs going on lately? A connection outside your home could be damaged.

Funny thing about that.
During the summer I noticed their vans on the road/ side of the road a lot more often then usually. At one point I was so ticked that, while driving, I stuck my head outside of my jeep and yelled "YOU ASSHOLES!" at an on coming Comcast van. Now, no one wants to be yelled at for just working at a place that is making someone else unhappy, but I had to get it off my shoulders. My dad, sitting in the passenger side, cried laughing.

FYI: This is two days straight without an internet disconnection. That's some kind of record for it since the initial crash.

Dear RIVE:
Keep calling, keep complaining, until they fix it, and make it a point about how difficult this has all been (being disconnected while on hold, for instance, especially if it happens multiple times). Always talk to a manager when you can't get anywhere with the initial rep. If the manager is no help, talk to his boss, and so on. A company whose policy is to value their customers will usually always offer something as compensation for your ordeal. If not, switch companies. Competition really is a beautiful thing.

Lord of the Locker Room

Comcast is well known to be one of the shittiest ISP's in existence.

Show them your butt, and when you do, slap it so it creates a sound akin to a chorus of screaming spider monkeys flogging a chime with cacti. Only then can you find your destiny at the tip of the shaft.

Relatively ancient and inactive

Eh. Usually when something brakes with my Comcast, it IS me. A broken something-or-other. Though it is occasionally Comcasts' fault, I didn't have that problem often.

When I called back I did ask for a manager, which I got a hold of and was rather friendly, but was kind of pointless because without a name it is hard to bust their balls on bad customer service.
Anyway, they want to send over someone to check it out, but it will not be for awhile and they will call me back.

Speaking of competition, I can not help but quote Tim Miller of the NewGrounds staff.
"If you ever get the chance to switch from Comcast to Verizon Fios you'll have a similar liberating feeling."
When he says "liberating feeling" he was talking about how someone felt after getting rid of AOL.

I swear, they noticed, on my record, I had the modem for five years, pushed the "fail" button, and now I need to buy a new one which is probably ten dollars more in price. When I call them, the modem magically works for a few hours which is just more evidence/ paranoia on the topic of Comcast's control over my modem.

Oh yes, and my television is working properly now.
Fixed itself?- I do not know..

I know comcast is no doubt a cheap skate company.
Except the funny thing is I have had them about one year and only good things have happened with them.
The company I switched from however(knology),has been the worst service provider I ever had.
Anything you have heard about Comcast,Knology had done to me :/.
Not to mention them not giving me a new modem when I needed one :(.

My family called to get comcast tv and internet a long time ago, and they said they didn't provide service, but for "nominal fee" of 175 bucks per ten feet from the closest comcast wire(200 feet awaly = $300 ish) they could put in a new wire. Also, anyone who wanted to use our wire that we paid for could use it for free... I was thinking plenty of profanities to say to them but instead I just hung up cause i'm that kind of guy. Now i'm with earthlink, which works miracles for me. It isn't quite as fast, but it has never gone down, never. :) (i just wish i could get rid of my cruddy netgear router, which is a total piece.)

I know, I do that a lot too, but it is kind of hard when you get disconnected on there end.

They probably will fix your connection, but it will begin to fail horribly if you give it a bit of time.

Now I am just paranoid...

I have not lost connection once after the connection self-fixed itself sometime after I got the call from Comcast on Tuesday.
If I do not lose the connection by the time the technician arrives on Saturday, I am going to look like some kind of jackass!

Comcast is pressing buttons at their evil Head Quarters trying to squeeze more money out of me...

:D I been in your situation. My modem was like not working for like 5 days straight. I called Charter on the first day and by the 6th day it fixed itself. Charter took forever to come -_- I think it was overheating or something and the modem didn't work properly cause it happened in July. So yes I looked like a jackass and I paid 30 dollars for the service call.
