I would just like to know, how many active people on this site are Mormons?
I'd also like to know if you guys wanna know anything about Mormonism, because what I can tell from school, many people base what they know on Mormon's from South Park (Not a very reliable source btw...)

If you guys wanna ask anything about it, or just say anything, feel free.

When South Park talks about/makes fun of religions, everything about it is generally true. The Mormon and Scientology episodes especially.

I am moving this topic to Null because no substantial argument is presented. (it appears to be just an information session, though debate will most likely follow.)

Also, this topic is ripe for trolling. Posters, consider yourselves warned not to make stupid comments.

I know very little about Mormonism. I recently thought it was an Islamic-based religion. Now that I looked it up on Wikipedia (yes, I thought it was Islam-based right until this topic) - well, actually, it really didn't say much except that you guys added another book onto the Bible. Still don't know a thing.

A large portion of the people on this website are atheist/agnostic/deistic (including me), so I really doubt you'll find a lot of Mormons, since it isn't that popular even in the theistic world.

Question: Is there anything major separating Mormons from Catholic/Orthodox Christians?

One of our now inactive modding friends, Kookster, was either mormon or a religion close to it, and i know hes on some religious mission at the moment. He was a good modder, a good friend, and i hope he returns soon. I think his trip was to last a few years too. Very committed.

Pretty much only the basic concepts are true, but not entirely... They inflate it to unrealistic levels.

For some reason that is entirely unknown to me, everyone seems to think I am mormon.

I used to live in Utah, so in know pretty much everything about the religion.

Quote from Centreri
Question: Is there anything major separating Mormons from Catholic/Orthodox Christians?

there are quite a few things actually.
1. (correct me if im wrong, my Mormon friend told me this) there is a fifth 'lost' sect of Judaism
2. Lucifer was Jesus' brother
3. God, who is the supreme god, gave 2/3 of the world's population to Jesus (the white peoples) and 1/3 to Lucifer (the colored peoples)
4. There are thousands of worlds each with their own god.
5. A male that completes a Mormon mission on Earth can become his own god of a planet, and the wife that he chooses becomes the goddess.

Now, the history of the church involves Joseph Smith.
Joseph found golden tablets supposedly given by God. God specifically told him not to write them down, but rather to preach about them. He wrote them down and the tablets were immediately destroyed. He founded the Mormon church in New York and received much recognition. However, they began to get persecuted and Brigham Young, the new leader, led the church on a travel to what is now Utah and claimed it the holy land.

(i understand some of these may be wrong, so just correct me)

Just because you used to live in Utaj doesn't mean you know everything about Mormons. I live in Utaj and was raised Mormon, and I know very little. I've never heard of most of those things you said... You're little paragraph is a bit brief and cuts out a bit more. Mormons didn't come directly to Utaj... They got kicked out of a lot of places by mobs and such.

Liar, Utaj is how I spell it. Is it wrong for me to make fun of my own state's name and the various pronounciations of letters in names of regions within that state? San Juan, Juab, and more that I'm too lazy to think abuot. (There is 'j's that have the normal j sound, w, h, and maybe more. It's like a mix between English, Spanish, and various native languages.)

1:I'm not sure about that. From what I can tell, you're talking about the 12 tribes of Israel, of which only 1 really (Joseph) is 'found'. One of our goals is to bring the other 11 (The sons of Israel) back.
2:Everyone is a child of our Heavenly Father. This is saying that Jesus AND Lucifer was our brothers. Along with everyone else.
3:God did not give the people to anyone. There was a great council in Heaven (Pre-mortal life as we call it. Before we came to Earth) where our Heavenly Father told us of the Great Plan of Salvation (I'll try typing this up on a document. It's kinda long.) where a Savior would be required to come down to Earth, live a perfect life, and be sacrificed for our sake. Christ said that he was do it, and give everyone their free agency, so that we could each make his/her own choices. Lucifer said that he would do it too, but he would get all the credit, and everyone would be made to choose the right to return to our Father in Heaven. This caused great debate, and, in the end, Christs plan was chosen. This made Lucifer extremely angry, and he fell into evil, and, as such, was cast out of Heaven, taking his followers, a good third of the 'population' with him.
4:There are worlds of infinite count, but I'm not exactly sure on this. I believe that they are ruled by Christ and our Heavenly Father, and once the 2nd coming is done with, there will be a long period of learning (Longer than a mortal mind can think of, I'm not sure...) and after this, we may become gods ourselves. This is not official doctrine though. It is my own personal belief.
5: A male Mormon who completes his mission is guaranteed nothing. A man has to choose the right all of his life in order to achieve the Celestial Kingdom.

Celestial Kingdom- the highest of the 3 degree's of glory. This is where our Heavenly Father dwells with his Angles.

EDIT:
Joseph Smith - He was told by an Angle, Moroni (He's the golden figure atop all of our temples if you look closely) of the Golden plates. These were a history of the peoples and Christ's ministry here in America. There is some proof of his Ministry here beside these plates, as when Cortez first came to America, he was thought to be the "Great white God" who promised to return one day to them.
These plates were supposed to be translated, but only after years of Joseph Smith learning of them. After translation, they were placed back into the Hill Chumorah where they were first placed by Moroni about 1600 years ago when he was a man living on the Earth.
One of the books in the Plates, called the book of Nephi, was giving to Oliver Cowdry, a man who was helping Joseph Smith translate, so that he could prove to his wife that what he was doing was true. These pages were lost, and Joseph Smith was instructed to not re-translate them.

Just a side detail, in my country, Mormons go house by house trying to convert you to their religion, and get mad if you reject them.

Those would be Missionarys.

All young men, at the age of 19, are required to go on a 2 year 'mission'.
This is for several reasons.
1. to grow closer to our Heavenly Father.
2. It's kinda related to tithing. at 20 years old, if a man is on a 2 year mission, he is giving 1/10th his life. We are not required to go on 1 every 20 years though, just once.
3. To spread the our Church around the world.

I know Kookster was mormon, he went on his mission a while back, I am too(devilisk laughed when he learned that) Mormons are definitely christian, for some reason people think we are something else entirely..

Quote
2. Lucifer was Jesus' brother

Uh, SiN, all Christian and many other religions that we are ALL brothers and sisters so obviously Lucifer was also his brother.

Quote
3. God, who is the supreme god, gave 2/3 of the world's population to Jesus (the white peoples) and 1/3 to Lucifer (the colored peoples)

I have never heard this, and I know my doctrine pretty well, we believe that God presented a plan where we would receive bodies, go to Earth, have free agency to do as we want, and then we would earn our acceptance back to him, Lucifer presented a similar plan, except without free agency, where everyone would be forced to be perfect, 1/3rd of heaven followed his plan, and therefore never received bodies, and followed Satan, and the others chose the first plan.

5. A male that completes a Mormon mission on Earth can become his own god of a planet, and the wife that he chooses becomes the goddess.

True, but extremely twisted, we only believe that we will become like gods, not that you will each recieve your own planet :P

That entire little history you had was extremely twisted, especially the part about him disobeying God, God wanted him to write them down, the plates were taken back up by the angel Moroni after he finished. :P I'm not going to explain the rest..
