Pokémon League RPG

Map type: RPG / Adventure
Number of players: 5 (all allied)
Creator: lolzzzzzzzz

Map Description: You will embark on a journey to become the Pokémon Champion of the legendary Olympus League.

For anyone who has not heard about Pokémon games (really?), this map embodies a lot of the features that made that game franchise one of the best selling of all time (second behind Mario). You can capture more than 60 species of Pokémon and use any combination of them in battle. You can interact with NPCs, trade Pokémon with them and many of them will battle with you. There are a bunch of puzzles to be solved and many of the available Pokémon are not easy to catch. I don't want to give a lot away but there are a lot of secrets in this map that can help out the player.

I tried polishing the map as much as possible, I gave unique colors to all the units used in the map and the conversation sequences are very true to the original Pokémon game. The best thing in this map though, the sound. I added the battle sounds directly from the Pokémon game to this map and now, every battle is marked by good music. However, this makes the map a bit... heavy, 2.6 MB.

If you liked SpacePirateKhan's Pokémon RPG Red's Quest, you will love this map (I was influenced a lot by that map when making this one but I did make mine directly from scratch). I'd like to call this the ultimate Pokémon map but there are a lot of things I wanted to add that are not in it, so a sequel will be coming although not anytime soon.

The map is attached into this post and as I've stated already, it is a bit heavy. Comments, feedback, suggestions are all welcomed although I will focus more on a sequel than this in the near future.

Hope you guys like it!

-Minor cosmetic errors corrected.
-Fixed major bug and error.

----------------------------------
May 7, 2008
----------------------------------
-Made map easier at start but still needs full house to beat the whole map.
-Cheapened up the upgrades for both armor and damage.
-Version with sound is very heavy and probably will take forever to download on Battle.net. I'll put it on hold for now until I can find a way to better compress the wav files.
-Corrected a few issues.

----------------------------------
May 8, 2008
----------------------------------
-After much complaints that the map was extremely difficult and too long, I nerfed a lot of the trainers, Pokémon stats, etc.
-Fixed Gym battles error of constantly spamming Pokémon.
-Balanced out Arbok, Leafeon and Scizor. The start SHOULD BE EASIER NOW.

----------------------------------
May 9, 2008
----------------------------------
-More Pokémon have special abilities (total of 15 total, just have to look around for them).
-Got rid of the ugly Cerebrates and placed an Observer detecting system.
-Run mechanic fully functional.
-Buying mechanic much more practical.
-Mine reloading fully functional.
-Total of 12 secrets in map involving a variety of records such as Pokémon obtained, cash accumulated, etc. They provide great bonuses.
-Hopefully, lag is gone and map runs smoothly.
-Start of map is easier but end is still tough and needs full house.
-Estimated time to finish map: 1-2 hours, depending on Pokémon used and obtained.

I'm currently fixing some issues in it. I got a message from a map user that told me a big error that I wasn't aware of. Don't download it yet, I will fix the issue and then update the attachment

-------------------------------
EDIT
-------------------------------

The bug and error are fixed and the banner is working. The start is now easier so that players can learn the basics more smoothly than before. Map is up and able to be downloaded.

Well, the map does have the right idea but it's heavily flawed. I like how you actually get transported to another arena when fighting which at least adds some style but it feels too repetitive. Also, whats with Arbok kicking your ass every battle?

Here are some suggestions I recommend:
* Add a spell system
* Follow-up on other existent RPG's to enhance the player's experience. Such as Doodan's: Super Mario RPG, RPG or one of those FF RPGs.
*Make the battles be in a 1v1 format. Then, when either you or an enemy's pokemon faints, it switches over to the next.
*Improve on terrain rather then just using a square lay-out.
*Add a level-up system. Which could collaborate with the spell system. (A level up for a pokemon adds a new move)

An Improvement on JordanN's list.

> Spell System (Moves such as Thunderbolt, Flamethrower, Ice Beam)
> Level Up System (Customizable Death Values and Counters)
> Advanced Battle System (Integrated 2v2, 1v1 and 2v1 [when opponent faints with no other Pokemon])
> Extended Terrain (The Terrain Forum and Ladder can help you design a well made arena)
> Experience System (The Trainer slowly levels up after various experiences)
> Out of Combat (HM Moves such as Fly)
> In-Combat Advanced (Moves such as Fly allow the player to be invincible for a short amount of time [burrowed units, death counters])
> Wider Selection of Pokemon (WE WANT MOAR !)
> RPS Gameplay (Apply Weakness and Resistance via burrowed units and such)
> NooBJustsu (Noob Level for training!)

Yeah, I was thinking of adding almost all of the features you guys listed, except for RPS gameplay, I'm not very familiar with burrowed units triggers but if you guys could direct me to a tutorial link I would gladly give a shot at adding said feature.

Okay, onto the said suggestions:

-Alright, spell system. I wanted to add spell systems but I actually... got into the location number limit, unbelievable. As of right now, I have 1 single location available to use. As a result, I decided to drop spells and add something different. Certain unique Pokémon in my game such as Jumpluff, Starmie and Hippowdon do have a spell or rather, a nice little powerup.

-Battle mechanics. I did not add the switching system because I got a lot of complaints from testers that it would be boring for the reserve players to wait and see what happens in battle. I added the switching system for Gym Leaders, after one of their Pokémon faints, he/she will release another.

-Battle difficulty. I now realize that the game is TOO LONG and TOO HARD. I will test it out more until I find the right level of difficulty suitable for, well, most players.

-Terrain style. Okay, I confess, I got lazy of trying to make good, polished terrain for mountains because simply... they took too long. I made the Temple very well and also the Forest but the Lake, Cave and Mountain... they are a bit... yeah, you know. Halfway through my terrain making I decided to focus more on revive and capture triggers so...

-Map moves. Also really pondered on adding this but again... I truly ran out of locations! I wanted to add spells, levels and map moves but I don't have enough locations in order to do so and I verified it carefully, all my current locations are in use :(

-More Pokémon. Hmmm, I used all attacking units for Pokémon except for the ones that can't be created through triggers (eg: Arcturus Mengsk). A lot of the Pokémon are obtainable through trades and secret areas. To trade with people talk to them via interact and check to see what they want. Once you obtain that Pokémon bring it over the trading block on top of your screen and talk to them again and voila. That would be like... roughly more than 60 Pokémon? :ermm:

-Attack mechanics. I'm not very familiar with triggers making use of burrow and Interceptors but if you guys could link me to a tutorial page, I would gladly give a shot at that.

-----------------------

I'm going to ease up at the start so players can get a faster hold of the map.

I will also try and remove unnecessary locations so I can try and add more special powers / moves / features.

This is not yet the final version but it is still playable and should not bug IF and ONLY IF none of the players who started leave.

-----------------------

Ok fellas, this SHOULD BE the final version except for the starting tutorial for new players which I will make sometime later. Everything right now seems to be fully functional, tested with full house and then 4 players and went pretty far into the map until I got disconnected, oh well.

If you experience any errors or bugs please inform me here, I'll look into it and solve the issue.

From the suggestion list, I added these:

-More special abilities for unique Pokémon (Total of 15).
-Smoother map flowing (got rid of some useless hypered and preserved triggers).
-Smoother purchasing and healing (no more teleporting away).
-Start is much easier (balanced out ALL Pokémon and start is around 10 minutes only).
-Added more secrets (Total of 12).
