PROFESSIONAL MAP MAKER



DREAD KNIGHTS
Dread Knights is a 6 player map about killing hordes of enemies and leveling up very quickly.
The objective is to destroy all monster nests on the map. Monster nests are randomly placed each time the map is played.
The more monster nests you kill, the more difficult enemy spawns become.

Players can upgrade attributes by spending experience. There are four attributes.

STRENGTH
Increases sword length.
Increases sword width.
Increases sword damage.
Increases arrow penetration.
Increases max hp.
Increases power regeneration rate.

DEXTERITY
Increases bow damage.
Increases bow attack speed.
Increases sword attack speed.

RESILIENCE
Increases shield regeneration rate.
Increases hp regeneration rate.
Increases maximum power.

AGILITY
Increases movement speed.
Increases dash distance.
Increases dash recovery speed.
Increases power regeneration rate.
Increases maximum power.

CONTROLS
W -> Use bow.
D -> Dash.
Number Keys -> Choose menu options.

OTHER INFO
Players can upgrade their shields by destroying mineral fields which are also randomly placed. This is shared.
In multiplayer players can revive fallen knights by spending exp. The cost is based on the highest level attribute of the dead player.
In singleplayer the player can claim revive altars for extra lives.
Players get health regen for a short period for killing a monster nest. It Also spawns healing orbs that travel to their allies to heal them as well.
Trees don't do anything yet.
Experience is shared. Any experience earned by you will also go to your allies. But spending exp only comes from you.


INTERESTING FEATURES
Snow system which shows nice looking snow flakes falling around the players.
Projectile system with all sorts of fancy configurations for making all kinds of projectiles.

If you play the map please let me know what you think. There are a lot more things that go with the vision for this map that haven't been added yet.
I've only worked on this for 2 weeks as a fun side project and I'll probably keep it that way and just work on it when I need to blow off some steam or whatever.

Gonna play this ASAP. Though meta seems like you should split up and try to kill all monster nests simultaneously.

Its funny that has happened naturally in pub lobbies, I think people assume exp is not shared (it is) and they want all the kills for themselves or something maybe, cause any time I would try to group up with others they would try to isolate themselves. Maybe they can just smell my stench through the screen.

Jokes aside scmscx is a god tier gift ya, set the standard.

Also it should be said I only used chkdraft for this map. I didn't use scmdraft at all. So nice work to jj, thanks for that.

Quick feedback just from the video.

  • Love the snow and bow draw effects. Subtle, but adding nicely to the atmosphere.

  • Sometimes a bit grindy (probably intended), but sometimes no enemy in sight for quite a while

  • The text spam is real. Maybe make it so the +X minerals text only appears max. every 3s? Bonus points if you can show the accumulated value if multiple mineral values had been gained since.

  • In a similar vain: No need to show the menu all the time. Could have 3 modes to cycle through via hotkey. Full, collapsed, off. Collapsed only shows:
    Str: 21
    Dex: 10
    Res: 5
    Agi: 0

    possibly top left, possibly as a leaderboard.
    Show the hotkeys in mission objectives. Mode(s), Upgrades, Spells

  • Weapon design leaves me a bit confused.
    • The sword length is becoming ridiculous. No longer melee at that point. Make it slash more in an arc and less long?
    • It looks like you can use sword and bow at the same time?
    • In terms of harming enemies what's the difference between a long sword and the bow while slashing a ball of enemies? It looks like it's minimal and thus just boils down to your preference, spamming key/kiting vs. getting up close and personal.
    Would probably rework it some, so that there's AGI/DEX builds (bow/dash) and STR/RES builds (sword/tank) and make it inefficient to go both routes.


Also what wizardry is this that your menu is not part of the regular chat display? Can we now place text anywhere? O.o

Definitely meant to be grindy and spammy. In the future I have ideas for units that can catch up to the player or fire projectiles using the same system the player uses. Also there will be something called mutations where once the enemy unit count reaches a certain threshold, any units after the threshold are prone to mutating and can become either a smaller amount of more powerful units or some kind of event, like a high damage explosion or something.

Making a system to display exp gained confined to a single text line is on my list of things to do.

The full idea is that players will be able to find enchantments for their swords that do more advanced things and have limited consumption. For bows the full idea is for players to find different types of arrows which also do different things - for example explosive tip or higher velocity or higher penetration which would make the arrow penetrate more enemies etc. Once these things are implemented there will be a lot more variety.

This is a cool map with some awesome mechanics but it also feels a bit like it's not living up to its full potential, like a bit empty.

I don't know if you were trying to emulate Vampire Survivor.

But ultimately it ended up being pretty easy, the monsters I guess weren't good at surrounding and new monster types didn't require much need to adapt strategy.

If you don't know about Vampire Survivor I recommend playing it or watching someone play it because you can get a lot of good ideas.

Yeah your criticisms are valid. It is definitely unfinished. It needs to be more difficult and have varying encounters and more variety with playstyles. I haven't played vampire survivors but some others have made the same comparison, I'll prob give it a shot soon. Thanks for playing!
