Good, it's a start. Now I'm wondering if one of the custom portrait authors from old times can be reached and persuaded to re-render some of their stuff in high resolution. There were truly exceptional fully custom portraits for the original SC, but it took a few years for them to appear (around 2003-4 was when the scene really did bloom, I think).

Thought I'd chime in since I made quite a few custom portraits like 12 years ago.

I made all of them with a program called Poser, and I'm not convinced I still have the source files for all of them. A few of them I'm positive I don't. Some of them also probably would not look all that good in a higher resolution, because, admittedly, some of them looked kinda gnarly before they got shrunk down, after which they looked pretty good.

I'm not actually sure I still have the hard drive that I made all of those on, but I'm not ruling it out because there's a chance that I do and that the drive still runs.

There's probably only two or three portraits that I'd consider re-rendering -- C.W. Reffner (the blonde green marine, although he'd look SUPER janky), a marine woman who wasn't looking at the camera, and a blonde woman with goggles over her head with a very mechanic vibe to her. Honestly, the last one is the one I'd be least likely to do because the remastered Dropship is pretty close to what I was kind of going for.

All three of them were supposed to be for a mini-campaign I wanted to do called Seren Colony that (judging from the very small notes I left and the few maps I had sketched/done for it back in 2008) was going to involve a lot of defense-oriented maps with one half of the force being controlled by the AI (either resource gathering or the actual defending part). Was supposed to be set before Episode 1 and be about a horribly mismanaged and, in some cases, "mismanaged", border colony.
Thanks for chiming in. I have (probably) all of your old portraits for Classic even though I'm not modding that one anymore (short of probably getting some of the old stuff updated... down the track). If there is anything to be released sometime, I'll be the first in line to ask for a permission to use these. :)

Given that I've basically been out of doing anything with SC1 for over 10 years (outside playing it on my own) you don't need to ask. I'm honestly really happy (not to mention very surprised) that other people did remastered versions of edits that I made back then.

Again, thank you for your amazing works. I'm glad you come here.

Alright, so I couldn't really stay away from at least trying to make a portrait for remastered SC, kinda just for old time's sake, you know?

The only thing I didn't do with the ones I made is that I didn't make SD-equivalents for them, and I'm not sure how critical that is. I also made a portrait of just all static because it might be useful to someone.

I'll probably post these kinda soon.

-- Kinda reminded me of Turmalis when I was done, only if Turmalis lost his mind and decided that having too many bright lights on was the solution to life's problems. I'm not that big of a fan of how it looks in-game, kinda blends in with the Protoss console a bit, but if someone else disagrees then I'm not one to judge.

-- Even if I absolutely had to make a smaller res version of this one, I wouldn't make one, I'd just use the old custom I did of that woman with short blonde hair and goggles. Even though she's facing the other direction. In-game she looks pretty good. I'm a big fan of the remastered Dropship portrait in general (easily my favorite), and while it's easy to say that it doesn't look different enough, I would counter by saying that the lighting changes I attempted did not look very good.

-- Genuinely one thing that annoyed me about terrans was that Duran is the only one that has darker skin. Back in the day I tried (and didn't really succeed) to make a darker skinned Marine. I had much better luck with the remastered portraits. Haven't put him in game, but I did make an extra fid animation for him. I kinda like the remastered civilian portrait, not going to lie.

-- This is too complicated to explain. I remember wanting to make one of these for my old Defense of Seren Colony campaign that I was making back in 2007-2008-whenever but never getting around to it.

Glad to see you come back. Actually, my rendering skill was inspired by your portraits.
I made a remastered version for your valkyrie portrait for my custom campaign before.

That was one of my personal favorites. Love how it turned out, might have to check that campaign out sometime.

Have you considered portraits of the Taldarim? I was doing strange experiments ... I tried to make a portrait using the base of the video of the youtube marauder (technically it worked, but I'm bad at editing ...)

You mean the protoss with the red eye? Tell me what portraits you want.

The truth is, the skin worked completely (all units), although at the moment there is no plugin that allows showing the originals and recolor at the same time, I thought about making an "exe" dedicated exclusively to these.

I'll be watching if you get to do portraits like this. Thanks man ^^

Apparently I still have some of my old Poser 6 files, so I might be able to do a remaster of some of my old custom Terran portraits. However, I caution everyone hoping they'll look more advanced than what you'd see on a PS3.

I also found a weird unfinished portrait that I'm a little sad I never finished now, because I think it would have gone over really well.

That is a skeleton with a helmet on.

Apparently I still have the animation files for it, so I may have to see if I can reinstall Poser 6 and see if it's worth finishing or not.

The Curious

Great! Anything at all would be good, and knowing your skill, I have high(ish) hopes. :)

Trial and error... mostly error.

So two things;

- Poser 6 doesn't really want to cooperate when it comes to rendering frames to images. It's over 15 years old and the results are admittedly not pretty as it is.

- Apparently, you can use any resolution you want for a portrait for SC:R. I tested that with a 256x256 texture sequence (which I admittedly shrunk down from 1024x1024) from Deus Ex: Revision. Doesn't quite look as good as I was hoping in-game.

After realizing this, I converted the Battle.net yellow ultralisk animation into a portrait with a single fid and tlk animation. The lone fid animation doesn't quite loop that well though.

I may post this if I can clean it up.

As far as I know, to make original portraits for remastered you could use 3d or cut portraits from YouTube (effective for the marauder for example)

I would like to do it, but for some reason the video export does not work well for me :(

Whenever you are making some new portraits which inspires from Cynon old Starcraft one, some other people will think like, "Yay, they are going to make some custom campaign which based on the original." Although, some of the Starcraft Custom Campaign might NOT work on the Remastered because of the GRP, custom portraits which aren't from Starcraft, etc won't run it well.
