Find Me On Discord (Brood War UMS Community & Staredit Network)
Whether you're a mapper, a modder, a programmer who makes tools for the mappers, or even just someone who plays UMS, why are you here? And what keeps you here after all this time even as SC continues to fade into the history books of gaming?
I'll start first: mapping has simply been a fun hobby that I somehow still enjoy doing after all these years. AlphaMC, creator of the Death Knighte trilogy, once said mapping was like the mcgyvering of programming - and I find that very true and part of the enjoyment factor of twisting the game into doing things the original programmers didn't even think possible.
We can't explain the universe, just describe it; and we don't know whether our theories are true, we just know they're not wrong. >Harald Lesch
I've asked that myself in the past. I've lurked to learn about mapping. Once I became apt, I wanted to give something back to the community, so I joined. But now? There is no real reason anymore. I guess I'm just used to being here.
However there's also no reason to not be here and there's still a few incentives left.
- It's still a topic that interests me
- Occasionally the content here makes me fire up sc again and enjoy the game once more
- I get to hang out with fellow nerds
- A perfect place when I feel like arguing tabs vs. spaces
- SI's cat photos
P.S. Your answer seems focused on why you still like sc mapping (which you can totally do without SEN) while I interpreted your question as "Why do you still visit SEN?". So I wonder what exactly do you wanna know? Why someone still creates content? Why someone still plays sc? Why someone still visits SEN? Why someone [fill in your personal sc related activity]? Or all of them?

I just came here to revive the mod night tradition.

Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home.
I'm keeping the line thick between Demon and top activity. It's a thankless job from the
(for now)three of us up there.
I initially came to SEN because there was nowhere decent for mappers to upload their work on the Internet. StarCraft's own website was complete garbage for us.
I stuck around SEN for the Map Nights, but now I only really lurk the Shoutbox, like the cell dweller I am.
None.
Because 15 year old habits are hard to kick.
Because you guys are my internet starcraft friends, duh.
None.
Wait... we have a choice?

Thank you all for the sincere and genuine responses.

I guess because in my mind SEN and mapping are inextricably linked. I can't imagine being a mapper and not using SEN. It has been an invaluable resource for map-making knowledge, testers/advice, map-making tools, and of course publishing my own maps and downloading others. At least as a Westerner SEN has been the go to spot. I think a mapper without SEN would have to make a lot of discoveries all on their own and, hell, how would they even have found the download links for SCMDraft or CHKDraft, etc etc.
When I made this thread what I was most interested in were the people who don't map anymore and who perhaps barely even play Starcraft anymore - for me it is confusing why they still are here. I was also interested to get perspectives from people who don't map but make map-making tools.
I'm here hoping for neu maps to come out. And memes :3
None.
I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.
Because this page is a part of my life and thus it is responsible for who I have become.
It is also interesting to see what you are doing with the EUD stuff in the remaster.
Also SI posting photos, but I would still visit without big cat photos.
And most people I see here are around forever, so it is interesting to read from them.
I like you guys, we grew up together :3 we share this one obscure hobby which gives us more in common than most folks in my day to day life. And I can usually count on getting a good laugh out of something here, when you guys are active at least
I visit once every year or so to see if anything exciting is happening.
