Creating a System Shock (2) like map

I hope that most of you will know System Shock 1 or 2, if not then get to know it right away (clicky). Lately I have been busy trying to duplicate things from System Shock 2 to Starcraft. However since System Shock 2 is an incredible diverse and in-depth game and Starcraft is rather limited, it is certainly not possible to get the real SS2 gameplay in Starcraft. But a lot of things are do-able, at least in theory and micro tests.

So, my question to you is: what would you like to see from System Shock 2 in a Starcraft map/campaign?
It will be singeplayer only. For those who don't know SS2 so good, here's a list of the most important SS2 features:
  • Combination of Science Fiction-Horror-Fantasy themes
  • Think-before-you-act gameplay
  • Hacking camera's, turrets, doors, computers, chests, etc
  • Developing your character with skills, upgrades and psionic abilities
  • Interactive and intens story line
And lots more...

None.

1. Hacking/repairing minigames
- could be done with a 'grid' of zerglings and a dark archon to mind control them or something, fail kills the zergling, mind control passes it to you and then quickly to another player you can detect (so you can't move it around and break the minigame), still you'd need some good grid triggering skills to detect lines of 3 though, if you reduced it to a 3x3 grid you'd just have to check for the 8 or so possibilities (3 horizontals, 3 verticals and 2 diagonals), tic tac toe'd.
2. Changing weapons and weapon degradation would be awesome, but would need virtual HP... Still if you put this in Maintenance skill and even Modify would be viable.
3. Logs you can listen/read anytime.
4. Inventory system that gives you more item slots as your strength increases.
5. Cool puzzles...no actual ideas but it's a must.

Also I think you might wanna reconsider optional coop multiplayer, because it can help a map a lot.

I will say this.

Starcraft map portage has got to stop.

Maybe in ScummEdit, but not in Staredit.

You cannot make a System Shock 2 map that does Starcraft or System Shock 2 justice.

You can't, you just can't.

About two years ago people would have said that a third person gunner game wasn't possible, but guess what? Tux made it.

Just make Deus Ex. Its arguably the best computer game ever. Besides that, Daedalus is a computer AI in the game :) so your a character haha. Damn i love that game. Deus ex has all the systems and componets you want, but better put together. By the way, if you want intense story line you definitely want to go with Deus ex.

When did Tux make a first person gunner game? He made a 3rd person gunner game but I haven't heard of his first person shooter.

Whatever, no one would have thought a THIRD person gunner possible.

Predator of Bed Chambers

Doktor Shotgun, I don't think your opinion is even thought about. Simple as your not thinking outside of the box. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and look at limits of current game. I'm sure more possible on " Warcraft 3 " but I wouldn't play it then since not on starcraft.

So I say do the map and good luck with it. Try get as many features as was on SS2 and keeping it in limits of sc so don't hit any walls a long the way.

If all else fails, crowbar the fucker

Oh yeah definitely do VHP so you can have psi powers that grow with your psi stat, and radiation/toxin damage. :D

But what's the ultimate purpose? It won't be as good as System Shock 2, or even remotely close. So think of something original.

What is the purpose of most maps? Is MA's dodgeball better than a flash game? Most games are made after something in real life, and him making this map would be great because he is transferring a game he enjoys to Starcraft.

Unless he's copying everything from SS2 then what's the problem? For the record SS2 DOES have excellent editing tools and everyone should play it but the whole point of starcraft maps like this is that it's easier to recreate something and modify it to your liking.

It will make for a fun SC map, even if he wasn't intentionally making after this game, it would still be enjoyable. IMO that's exactly what he should do, use the idea of the game, but not try to just remake the game.

I always wanted to make a Duke Nukem map,
but it would require vHP, ammo system and the enemies are NOT supposed to die in one hit..
Alas, a combination of those 3 is impossible for me :( .

Oops, didn't notice there were so many replies, I thought I would a notification if anyone would reply.

I guess I need to explain myself a bit more. I certainly won't and can't even get close to really re-creating the atmosphere and gameplay of SS2, of course I can't. What I do can try is to create a SC map which is elements from SS2 (and Deus Ex and a whole lot of other games and movies) which I think will be great in my map, if I can trigger them that is.

Is it impossible to truly re-create SS2? Of course it is. Will it be possible to do SS2 any justice with this attempt? Nope. Which is why I am most certainly not going to call it System Shock :P. All in all, I'm just making a map which I think will be great to play.

Oh and for those people who think it will be absolutely impossible to come even CLOSE to anything related to SS2: oh well ^^. The engine I am working on is already able to create complete computer systems with GUI, maps, files, internet, e-mail and lots more. At the moment I'm working on an advanced hacking system which allows the player to slice elektronic systems through methods similair to real-life methods (so no killing zerglings or whatever, but scanning for open ports, dump files, sending virus-infected emails, etc). Considering that all the codes of all the computers will be fully randomized in every game hacking will be really necessary.
Well, I haven't yet finished all of those options but I'm 60% at creating an engine which allows me to create them.

PS: Oh and I would love to create an advanced VHP engine which allows stuff like weapon upgrades/modifications, multiple enemies, psi abilities, etc. I got stuck on one a couple of months ago and then lost it in a crash or four.

PS2: By the way, the map will be absolutely single-player. I can see absolutely no way to get this engine working without using things which kinda ruin any form of multiplayer.

I think that a better setup for you would be to have the hero unit be a protoss unit, and give it more shields for the more upgrades it has, and you constantly set it back up to that amount, making it like armor.

A better setup then which? :dontgetit:
That is simple yet effective system for armour upgrades and bonusses, without having to use any form of VHP. However if you also want have different types of damage, reloading time, accuracy, etc you will need a form of VHP. If you already got VHP then I assume you don't need any non-VHP methods to inplent armour.
