Was it "illegal"?

:payne:

To facilitate the updating of Ahli's "Diablo - Mortal Shroud" map on the US server, I gave him access to my account.
However, Blizzard decided to block my Battle.net account because of suspicious activities. I suspect they have detected that someone from Germany is connecting on a Canadian account (though it could really be that it got hacked).
I tried to unblock my account via battle.net but somehow, it never considered the names I entered as being the proper ones associated with my account. After multiple attempts of figuring out how I was supposed to write my name ("Jeremi Grenier-Berthiaume"; tried with the french accents, and without the hyphen as well, and with only one family name at a time too), my account got permanently locked and they now require me to contact their "client assistance/support" to solve the problem.

Was it "illegal" for me to give away my account to someone else? Where can I read the Conditions (Terms of Service?) of StarCraft II?
I just do not want to call them to ask for my account to be unlocked by justifying the suspicious activity as being something that was planned, while it could be against the very Conditions I accepted when I installed their game.

Didn't you visit Germany when they locked it? *hint hint*

Contact them to get it unlocked. If they ask about the suspicious activity, tell them one of the following:

1) Your second computer's connection is proxied through Germany.

2) You went on vacation in Germany.

3) You commute back and forth from Germany for work.

One of the latter two would be better, assuming you and Ahli weren't switching access within hours of each other.

As for your question, I'm sure it's against their ToS to allow other people to use your account.

And then they see that someone from Germany disconnected the canadian-owner to update a map (it did happen, and they most probably have detected it?).

You went to Germany but were still connected to SC2 on your home computer, so you forced that client to log out so you could play in Germany. ;O

Also, does someone know of a way to verify my RealID name? Maybe through my published maps? It'd allow me to know how I am supposed to write my name properly...

Illegal, no. But as far as I know, Blizzard has never liked sharing accounts. I know there's something in their WoW ToS about sharing accounts, so I assume it has to be somewhere in the SC2 one as well. This just looks like they thought someone hacked the account so they locked it in order to prevent the hackers from messing with it. That happened to me once on my WoW account, and all it took to unlock was calling customer service.

The most drastic thing they may do is require you to fax or scan/email an official document with your name on it.

What kind of question did they ask you?

I made the mistake of losing my authenticator once. ONCE.
I'd imagine unlocking it because of unauthorized access would be much easier.

They asked what the name and address were on the account, and probably my phone number as well. I think it was mainly whatever personal info I had on there to verify it is me.

What is the "authenticator"?

Also:
Quote from Battle.net Terms of Use (http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/termsofuse.html); Section 5c
Username and Password.
During the Account creation process, you may be required to select a unique username and/or a password (collectively referred to hereunder as “Login Information”), and you may not share the Account or the Login Information with anyone other than as expressly set forth herein. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of the Login Information, and you will be responsible for all uses of the Login Information, including purchases, whether or not authorized by you. In the event you become aware of or reasonably suspect any breach of security, including without limitation any loss, theft, or unauthorized disclosure of the Login Information, you must immediately notify Blizzard by emailing http://www.battle.net/support.

The authenticator is either a phone app or a small device that generates a code you have to type in when you log into your account. It adds extra security to it.

Ah, the captcha?

If I go by the "my account seems to have been hacked", could Ahli get in trouble?

None.

Oct 13 2012, 5:32 pm DevliN Post #14

OVERWATCH STATUS GO

Not a captcha. It is a number generator that shows you a sequence of numbers that you have 30 seconds to enter when you enter your password to log in. Unless someone has your account's authenticator, they can't log into your account, essentially.

They could go as far as blocking the "hacker's" IP address, so that could be an issue for him. You're better off saying you let a friend in Europe use your NA account to publish maps to NA, and didn't realize that was an issue.

Anyone else agrees with this?

http://us.battle.net/en/security/theft#sharing
They talk about information-sharing and do not mention it is a breach of the Terms of Use. Maybe I misinterpreted something?

EDIT:
And I never seem to have seen an authenticator. How comes?

You're looking at this as if it is theft, which it isn't. You're really better off just being honest and saying you let a friend who didn't have access to the NA servers use your NA account.

You never saw an authenticator because you don't have one, have never ordered one, and don't have the app for one. It's just an optional thing for added account security.

Alright. Thanks for your input.
I'll contact Ahli just to make sure he is fine with me saying that.
I shall call Blizzard very soon and let you guys know what happened.

I do stuff and thingies... Try widening and reducing the number of small nooks and crannies to correct the problem.

In theory it is not allowed since only one person would be allowed to use an account. So, account sharing isn't allowed.

Locking the account is a safety precaution to avoid accounts being hacked and stolen and being used by multiple persons. It's good that this exists.

But since Blizzard has no global play and no global publishing feature, map and modmakers need to rely on other SC2 players.
You were on your long life experience trip which required me to use your account information to maintain the support of my arcade map on the US gateway as you couldn't publish it yourself because you had no computer with broadband internet with you (on your bike).

I did not use your account for playing a lot on the US server. I think I've played like only a few custom games on your account within the last 10 (?) months. Also, I think I've only thrown out of bnet once I think. :D
I've used it to post 1 forum post for developer suggestions once some time ago (this one).

But maybe it really got hacked.

I wouldn't lie and explain them the situation and recover your account. You might need to send them a picture of your SC2 box with the key or a copy of your ID card to make sure you are a legitimate person and the account's owner (That's why you have to write your real name into bnet account. Else you might not be able to recover it...).

If they want to contact me, they can send me an e-mail to my bnet account. My Battletag is Ahli#1603 and from there they should be able to get my mail (or use a Developer to contact me in irc).

If you have more serious problems recovering your account and my usage was the reason why the account was locked, I can contact someone from Blizzard that I met in person because of making the diablo map and helping out people in the EU forums.

I'm perfectly fine with that and I support telling the true story... If you lie, you would be screwed because you lose your credibility...

While we're at it, do you think I could ask them for my CD-Key? I can't install the game right now because I do not have this Key and there is no one back at home... Or would that be utterly suspicious? :P
