I was going to post this last week, but I tried something, but was busy.

Last week, literally overnight, my computer suddenly started connecting slowly, in short. The connection is fine and all, getting 54Mbps like it's supposed to be, then out of nowhere, it starts to hang, reconnect within a few seconds, works fine for a random amount of time between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, then repeats the cycle. It wasn't too obstructive to everyday task (IE having to reload a page twice, or reload SEN because the shoutbox was acting weird, or playing single player games). Not thinking anything of it, I stuck with it for two or three days. Then, it got to the point to where it would hang for a full minute, and it dropped me from SCII in the middle of matches. I promptly decided to take a break. I rebooted my cable modem and wireless router and logged in to it to see if anything had changed. To my dismay, there was nothing on the menu to blame. I then was cut off, being told that it was being managed by 192.168.1.2, which I was half a second from chucking my laptop out of my window because the computer is assigned 192.168.1.2. However, it did clear up for the better half of a day so I didn't care. Now, it's building to the comp-chucking point again. (I now have an non-updatable SC:BW because of my network)

What could cause this?

Additional details:
  • Before the modem/router reboot, when it hung I got the "Limited Connectivity" icon on my tray
  • All other devices appear to work just fine, however, the network storage drive I have seems to hang when I access it remotely to download files
  • Extended pings from my laptop report chunks of packet loss to websites such as SEN (no packets were lost by themselves, they were always lost in groups of 4 or more)
  • Extended pings from my laptop report chunks of packet loss to other devices within my network
  • I looked at the network map on my laptop, and I found something unusual (will post screenshot later)
  • [will post router model number later]
  • [will post wireless network adapter later]

Wireless interference, perhaps. Try changing to a different channel.

Better yet, get an Ethernet cable and wire that bad boy through your modem to see if the problem persists; if it does, it's a problem with your modem/ISP.

If that's fine, do the same except through your router. If the problem is there, then your router is bad.

If that's fine, it's an issue with wireless, which could still be a hardware issue with your router, but it's more likely just interference/a software configuration issue.

Couple of things wrong with this
A) My comp is hooked up wirelessly, not with the physical connection stated in the diagram
B) That "Unknown" device in the middle scares me.

Edit: I am currently hooked up with a cat5e cable and am getting flawless speed and no instances of my connection hanging. However, the network map looks exactly the same as above with a physical connection, and that "Unknown" is still in between. I'm thinking that because this is a military post, and people get evicted from drunk driving/horrible, screaming children that they have some channels set up that interfere with my signal.

Edit2: I disabled IPv6 on my wireless adapter and the "Unknown" disappeared... Dunno what that's about. Anyway, I'm going to try things out to see if there's any improvement by any chance.

Edit3: Disregard 2... I wasn't able to connect to my router at all last night after my computer restarted.

Sorry for the double post but the problem's getting progressively worse. I do know that the issue is on my computer's side

because other devices work just fine despite them being closer or farther away than my laptop. I'm thinking it could either be a

configuration issue or that my wireless NIC is failing, which I hope is the former. I haven't changed any options recently

besides turning of IPv6 and re-enabling it. Windows 7 keeps saying that it's identifying the router, and when it finally does,

it just cuts off and goes back to identifying. At that point, I can't even connect to my router or any devices on my network.

Another thing to not is that I keep obtaining different IP addresses.

I got ipconfig logs right here:

Sounds like HW failure.

reinstall your network drivers.
Rolled it back first to see if it could be an update. The problem's much more manageable, but still dc's sporadically. Updating renders the antenna useless and unrecognizable by windows.
Uninstalling and re-installing now

@Lanth, I've been suspecting it too, but I'm hoping its not considering this laptop's almost on its 5th year and very well out of warranty. I'll have to check to see if the antenna's easily replaceable.

Edit: Did a complete uninstall and reinstall of drivers from the manufacturer's website. Will edit again with results.

After resorting to a DBAN and reinstallation of windows, I can safely say it's hardware failure :/
Double posting to close the thread because the problem's resolved.
