I despise the "three note riff" nature of so much "rock" music today. The bands of yesteryear improvised, jammed, and generally fooled around with a song until it was closing time. No more. Synthesized beats and heavy production abound, no one can play without a thousand distortion and delay effects on their guitar...
It's a sad state of affairs for rock music. It no longer has any of that rawness from the blues and it doesn't have any of Jazz's swing. I feel like I'm a film noir detective, talking like this... but I am listening to Coltrane right now...
Anyways, my main point is that Jazz is a complex, changing music of variation. Rock music is a 4/4 3/4 genre, with little variation in it (besides "guitar solos"). The instrument's beats do not all fall at the same time (this isn't always a bad thing, mind you, it's just done so relentlessly in "modern rock"). Jazz has moods, happiness, elation, sadness, confusion, it's not all the same song by any means. Smooth Jazz is crap, by the way.
I love old rock music, but I despise what The Ramones did to music.
Now that I've got that off my chest, anyone else like Jazz? I like Miles and Coltrane, but just about anything that's got that Jazz swing to it is good to me.
