Hi
Thanks! This thread is dedicated to you, because you told me to do it in the shoutbox.
An introduction that I actually like...
Nicest thing anyone has ever forum replied to me.
Welcome to Sen, Ashenden.
I presume from one of your posts in an SC2 Showcase topic means you have SC2? Do you play melee at all? Which UMS games do you play? Do you play any other games?
Do you have any interest in picking up mapmaking for either SC1 or SC2? If you're interested in game development or computer programming, using a map editor is a fun and easy way to gain some experience in those fields. If you want to be a liberal arts or political science major, on the other hand, maybe it's not for you.
Welcome. Hopefully you'll have a good time here. Any other interests? SEN really is a starcraft site, but there is definitely a lot of other stuff that goes on here.
Thank you for the welcomes. Playing UMS has probably been the longest continual hobby of my life. I've always enjoyed user created content, especially with the drop in and discover mechanics introduced to me in the bnet 1.0 lobby system. I was also an active member of the BYOND (Build Your Own Net Dream) community for years. Long ago I fiddled with trying to learn to map, and my one Starcraft goal (I got as far as some basic triggering and continent terrain) was a multiplayer map inspired by the SNES game Uncharted Waters: New Horizons. I've always loved those types of games, and I logged quite a bit of time hosting Thrax-'s Bloody Pirates! and attempting to get players that would stay til the end. One of my favorite SC maps was Space Pirate Wars, which felt very inspired by things like Cowboy Bebop. One of my favorite WC3 maps was Legacies: Tides of the Serpent (I was a sucker for RPGs with -save functionality, and it was one of the first).
I have never seriously, or even quasi-seriously, tried to play melee. The closest I get is being a rather passive diplo fan, always on an island when possible. I play all sorts of games besides Blizzard's craft series. I'm a fan of roguelikes such as Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Cataclysm Roguelike. I play the Dota 2 beta very sparingly (I was more of a Tides of Blood/EotA Twilight/Advent of the Zenith/Desert of Exile fan, personally), I want to be an anesthesiologist but can't afford continuing schooling at present. I'm bad at paragraph formatting.
I want to play the original The Thing map. Way back when, a friend of mine told me it was awesome, but then later when we went to play it he said it was the wrong version or something.
If we can find it and it works (SickDeathFiend didn't seem to keep any of his maps on his personal website when he switched from mapping to making flash videos) I'd be very down to play it, or just about any other new or classic Starcraft 1 map.
Anyways, your community seems awesome and I am glad I found it.
None.
