Updating 3 year old gaming rig

I found an old gaming rig that I lost in a storage. It currently has a fried video card.

What I need is a new video card, and probably a new power supply if my current one cannot handle it.

My current power supply is OCZGXS850.
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD

Here is the list of what I need, including what I listed above:
Video Card
Wireless card
Keyboard
Motherboard?
Power supply?

I can't get my specifications right now, so I want to get the computer running with the things I need, then I can post up full specifications so I can update it further.

The power supply should be ample to handle even the most power-hungry of single GPUs. For the graphics card, I'll give a range of possible choices suitable for different budgets, depends on how much you have to blow on this.

GPU:
Sapphire Radeon 7970 - $480
Sapphire Radeon 7950 - $390
GIGABYTE Radeon 7870 - $360
EVGA GTX 570 - $300 ($10 rebate)
GIGABYTE Radeon 7850 - $260
Sapphire Radeon 6950 - $200
Sapphire Radeon 6870 - $170 ($10 rebate)

GTX 680 and 670s are perpetually out of stock, so you're better off giving up on those cards. Your choices right now are pretty much just AMD cards due to nVidia parts of similar performance being more expensive across the board in the price ranges above $150, except the Kepler cards, which are never in stock.

Wireless card:
- Wait on Excalibur's opinion on that.

Keyboard:
Das Keyboard Ultimate Silent (Silent version has Cherry MX Brown switches, which are better than Cherry Blue switches (found on the non-silent version) for gaming)

Motherboard:
Only necessary if the CPU is heavily outdated and an upgrade is necessary to prevent CPU bottleneck. Chances are you have something along the lines of an i7-960 judging by the fact that your motherboard has a LGA1366 socket, so it's unlikely you will need to upgrade.

PSU:
Should not be necessary unless this one goes kaput, since the wattage and power on 12V rails are way more than enough. I'm pretty sure Seasonic makes the OCZ power supplies, so it probably will not fail any time soon.

How bad would it be if I was to get the GIGABYTE Radeon 7850? I think the keyboard is way over my budget. Would about $50 be enough for a decent one?

Also, my first video card burnt out. How can I prevent this problem in the future? I don't want to spend $$$ and have the new video turn into trash.

By the way, why not 560ti?

It's a high tier card, you'd be getting close to maxing out most games if the goal is maintaining >30FPS. Getting 60FPS with no noticeable drop in image quality should be easily manageable if you spend some time customizing the graphical settings for each game.

If you need a cheaper keyboard:

I'm using a microsoft comfort curve 2000.

Now you might say, "microsoft? Keyboard? They can barely make an OS!". Let me tell you something. This is the best damn keyboard I have ever used. It lets virtually any key combination through correctly. It's not NKRO (I can't press Rshift Lshift X), but I can press more than 6 keys at a time, which is supposed to be the limiting factor in USB (USB only allows 6, but the keyboard sends it through in multiple polls). There are 10 extra keys (volume, back, etc...) which can be assigned macros. There's even a calculator button above the numpad, which is immensely useful for me.

The keys are rubber dome, but they're slim, and scissor switch.

I got it for free, but it costs $15-$20 new.

Monitor temperatures regularly with things like HWMonitor, I suppose. There are warranties on these cards so you're at least insured from early failures.

560Ti as well as the 560Ti 448 core edition get severely outperformed by the cheaper Radeon 7850. Not to mention you'll have the additional VRAM for games that need more than 1GB.

There's this "category special" on this XFX 7850 that ends today. It's $240 at the moment.

What about this video card?

I just found out the OS is Vista. I need to upgrade to Windows 7.

You're basically paying extra for the second fan, in which case you're better off buying the Gigabyte 7850 which is $10 cheaper than the second XFX card, and runs cooler as well.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

I need to rescind my keyboard. The comfort curve isn't scissor switch. It's still the best keyboard I ever got for free. Sidewinder x4 if you really want to have a "gaming" keyboard. But if you're going to spend over $30 on a keyboard, go all out and get something that isn't rubber dome.

$170 - GTX 560 Ti - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1781498
$150 - 6870 - http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#c=41&sort=a5
$200 - 6950 - http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#sort=a5&qq=1&c=37

7850 is roughly 10% faster than the GTX 560 Ti. I don't think that's worth an extra $90.

either of these should be worth the $40 extra. The color difference on my IPS vs my TN panel is just amazing, well worth the $40.

The wireless card is definitely good, but I'm not sure you need to be spending $45 on it.

Not too related/necessary, but get an ssd if you can. It's easily my favorite thing about my computer.

So you were looking to get a monitor, too? If you were considering 23", there's also this one, which is the 3rd cheapest one if you search for an IPS monitor on Newegg (the ones rockz mentioned are the two cheaper ones):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824116527

rockz: The price on that wireless network card is likely because it is dual band. It seems to be the cheapest dual band internal adapter they have on there.

The monitor I'm getting comes up to $129 after my coupon.

Regarding the graphics card, I want something enough to play Guild Wars 2. Would downgrading my graphics card allow me to play GW 2 on high setting?

May 21 2012, 3:46 am ShadowFlare Post #14

Ah, that's what rockz meant by $40 extra if you wanted to get an IPS LCD monitor.

560 Ti can definitely handle Guild Wars 2; I assumed you were looking to max out Skyrim/BF3/SC2 or something along those lines, but if it's Guild Wars 2 it should be plenty. Since rockz managed to find it going for $170 instead of the normal retail price of ~$280 that Newegg puts the 560Ti at, you should buy that instead of a 7850.

ᴄʜᴇᴇsᴇ ɪᴛ!

GTX 560 Ti handles skyrim fine.

Also, if you really want to make a good gaming computer you get a $150 CPU and a $500 GPU. Your CPU will not really be a bottleneck except at low resolutions where it doesn't matter.
